I've had to work all week and just turned on the news to a protest in NV. I think it's NV. I know it involves cattle, grazing, and a stand-off, but not much else.

Can anybody provide a Cliff note to catch me up?

Nevada Cattle Rancher Wins 'Range War' With Feds

April 12, 2014

... Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

"I have no contract with the United States government," Bundy said. "I was paying grazing fees for management and that's what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay."...

... today the BLM said it would not enforce a court order to remove the cattle and was pulling out of the area.

"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," BLM Director Neil Kornze said...

... The roundup began April 5, following lengthy court proceedings dating back to 1993, federal officials said. Federal officers began impounding the first lot of cows last weekend, and Bundy responded by inviting supporters onto his land to protest the action.

"It's not about cows, it's about freedom," Utah resident Yonna Winget told ABC News affiliate KTNV in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"People are getting tired of the federal government having unlimited power," Bundy's wife, Carol Bundy told ABC News...

... A spokesman for the Bundy encampment told ABC News roughly 300 protesters had assembled for the protest, while a BLM representative estimated there were around 100 people...

... As the movement grew by the day, and demonstrators rallied together, bonding by campfires at night, local protest leaders warned people not to wear camouflage and keep their weapons inside their vehicles.

Both sides said the issue is one of fairness, with the federal government maintaining that thousands of other cattle ranchers are abiding by the law by paying their annual grazing fees, while Bundy's family and supporters say the government's actions are threatening ranchers' freedoms.

"It's about the freedom of America," said another of Bundy's sisters, Margaret Houston.

"We have to stand up and fight."...

A Bing search and probably google also, will give you many sites that suggest Harry Reid and his son want that land to hand over to a Chinese company for a solar plant.

yeah...I looked at and read a number of those.

"allegations" with no offer of proof or evidence while referring to him as "Dingy Harry Reid Democrat Socialist".

"shocking allegations" reported, again no evidence or proof but asking that you sign a petition.

BLM attempted cover-up of Sen. Reid/Chinese gov't takeover of ranch for solar farm

I will wait to see if these 'bombshells' hurled have any actual factual basis. Until then I will maintain that if folks want to quibble over who owns the land by going back to the 1800's, we should go all the way back to the original ownership.

Of course they have to say "alleged" before there is any proof. I imagine there is something.

None of the places I saw referred to him as Dingy Harry....although I have heard that phrase used. And really, he gets off easy with that one compared to what others are called at times.

I generally don't approve of name calling, yet I am guilty of it myself.

I clearly labeled Romney as an entitled bully.

I refer to Palin as a celebrity.

I describe McCain as a war monger and crabby, but I am not convinced that is name calling as opposed to simply accurate descriptors.

So I feel okay about calling Obama as arrogant and inexperienced.

I'm not sure how that's really possible since there is no "land grab", it's already federally owned land. The rancher in question stopped paying rent (grazing fees) in 1993 and the chinese company in question didn't even exist until 1996 and didn't start managing solar projects until 2010, so apparently there was some time travel involved. There is also the issue that he is still free to use the land he just can't do so for free, which seems completely reasonable, I've seen no reports that he wouldn't be able to use the land if he pays what he owes to use it.

Even if we ignore the fact that there can't be a conspiracy to take away land from someone who doesn't own it in the first place, and the time travel issue, there's still the issue the fact that he isn't paying to use land he doesn't own, he's stealing from the American people, how is that ok?

There you go again, spidey's mom!

i agree. Ir would appear that BLM waltzed long after agreements were made and fees paid to the county and state and decided it was their way or the highway.

Just another example of a government that is taking more and more control over a "free" people.
