[h=1]What is Islam?[/h]The word Islam means voluntary "Submission" or "Surrender" to the Will of God. It derives from the root word "salam," meaning peace.

In the Quran, God defines that the only purpose for which He created mankind is to Worship Him. Islam recognizes that humankind has free choice in whether to obey or disobey God, but ultimately we will be held accountable to God in the next life for the choices that we make in this life.

God sent Prophets to teach mankind how to worship Him; starting with Adam, including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and the last of the messengers, Muhammad (peace be upon them all). The Islamic position is that all of these prophets came with the same message, that there is no deity worthy of worship except the One True God, known in Arabic as Allah.

[h=5]Islam recognizes the close relationship between the body and soul. Whereas the body originates from the earth and has a defined period of life on this earth, the soul originates from God and does not die. Islam encourages the individual to focus on keeping the soul healthy, through the remembrance, obedience and worship of God. There should be a correct balance in strengthening the soul and not over-indulging with the pleasures of the body.[/h]

Islam is a natural way of life that encourages one to give due attention to their relationship with God and His creation. Islam teaches that it is through the doing of good deeds and seeking the pleasure of God that souls find true happiness and peace. It is in this context that the word Islam derives from the root word "salam," or peace.

Thank you for sharing this. I quoted just the last part of your short piece because it seems so universal. I wish more people learned more about Islam and the teachings, compare it to other religions that they are more familiar with, and let go of the prejudice created by a few extremists.

I live in a city that has a small and gentle Islamic community. They are working hard to improve the community by their actions.

Every religion has extremists, and Islam is no different than those extremists in Christianity. Many people have been murdered in the name of Christ. Many have been murdered in the name of Islam. many people have been murdered just for being the wrong religion, or the wrong cultural background, or the wrong sexuality.

It is good to be reminded that the good of religions and people out weight the few who are not in keeping with the teachings of our religions.

Recent conversation with a very lovely Muslim family I cared for after the birth of their first baby:

Me: "Do you guys have a certain time of morning that you'd like me to stay out of the room if possble so you can pray?"

Them: "We do pray, but you are welcome to come in anytime if there's something you need to do. If you don't mind our asking, do you have a particular faith? You seem so sensitive to others' faith."

Me: "I don't mind at all that you asked, and yes, I am a Christian. Mostly I just try to treat people the way I'd want to be treated. I'd appreciate someone asking me about my needs so I try to do that for others."

Them: "Amen!"

Me: "I don't know as much as I'd like about a lot of faiths, but from the bit of reading I've done, it seems the difference between what Christians and Muslims believe is really not that big."

Husband: "We're not that different at all....our similarities are far far greater than our differences. And really, I think that talking about our similarities is a much more productive, meaningful conversation."

Our unit got a nice card from them thanking us for taking good care of mom and baby girl.

What a wonderful connection. This is certainly not in the "script", and yet it is the critical piece that bonded family with you, and you with family. We need to get the word out that our similarities are so great and our differences so small.

Thank you for sharing.

This what I know about Islam;

It is a religion which worships one God (Allah) that has it's roots in the Jewish tradition of Abraham.

It is a religion which puts great emphasis not only on the Qur'an, but also on the example of Mohammad.

It is a religion which, like Christianity, has spawned wars and death because of interpretation of the written word and concepts of Islam.

It is a religion of great faith and beauty that will tolerate great ugliness amongst the followers, much like Christianity.

Peace to you.

In religion AND politics it is more constructive to talk about our shared values than to criticize relative to our perceived differences. In politics, when we cannot even acknowledge our shared values we cannot begin to compromise.

It seems that you didn't know any thing about Islam (The real religion).

listen to me:

Allah who is the creator of us made these religions (christian ,Jewish ,and Islam) but in sequence.

Also Allah save just the Islam from Interpolating and manipulating ,then ask the people to faith in Islamic religion only.

Nowadays Christian, and Jewish religions have a lot of editing by humans and there is a lot wof wrong things in it.

Take this example about Jesus peace be upon him

Christianity Cannot be the Religion that Jesus Preached: The story of Christianity is the story of the beliefs that Jesus professed developing into the religion that professes Jesus. In other words; dogma. It is pure folly to believe that Simon Peter, Thomas, Mary Magdalene et.al followed Jesus because, when he died, they would be able to absolve their sins by believing in him. This later theological construction was created by believers who were searching for a meaning to the seemingly pointless execution of their leader and teacher. Those who originally followed Jesus did so because of his life--because he was an exemplary teacher who radically reinterpreted the Law in favor of inclusion rather than exclusion. Those who now follow Jesus do so because of his death. They turn a man's poignant teachings--his life's work--into a secondary and near meaningless preface to the panacea of his death. We primarily have Paul and John the evangelist (two people who did not know Jesus in his life) to thank for this inexcusable dumbing-down of Jesus' life. With Paul and John's help, what Christianity would become is embodied in the Nicene Creed.Take a look at it. Dogmatic fiat has expurgated everything the man stood for.

Finally it is your decision to faith in what do you want ,but remember Allah didn't create us to do what we want , and We are responsible for our actions and will be asked about it after death to decide as we enter paradise or hell.

Our life is just a test.

Peace to you

It seems that you have wrong idea about Islam.

If you read the history of Muslims especially the history of prophet Mohammed peace upon him, you will find How was Prophet Muhammad forgave many but most people who are at fault with him and also do not kill non-Muslims when he opens the country but treated them well and provided them with protection also.

peace to you.

You seem to be having a battle, I prefer not to engage and will leave you to it.

Religious dogma can, after all, be a very bloody thing as evidenced by the deadly rift between Sunni and Shia.

Peace to you.
