Respecting Foreign Laws

  1. Tourists are once again getting into trouble in Italy, with two American women caught carving their names into Rome’s Colosseum.
US tourists caught carving names into Rome’s Colosseum | World news | The Guardian

American tourists seem to have a reputation as the worst tourists out there (World's Worst Tourists: Americans Top List In New Survey (SLIDESHOW)). Is it any wonder when stories like carving initials into historic ruins (even with signs in both Italian and English stating not to) pop up every so often? I certainly don't condone what these two women did, and can't believe the sheer arrogance and idiocy it took to ignore those posted signs. It's bad enough people don't respect things in their own hometown, but when a guest of another country?

What a couple of morons! Totally disrespectful, shameful; not to mention illegal. That they would carve there own names as well is supremely STUPID!

It seems a bit sad that there should even have to BE a sign (or a law) that says you should respect buildings that are thousands of years old and recognized globally as a significant part of history.

Sorry guys, Americans are known worldwide as being loud, arrogant and obnoxious.

    That's the bad news.

The good news is, it's only a few of you who give you all a bad name.

I live in an area that can get a lot of Americans and the vast majority are just like us; normal sensible human beings.

No worries, Grumpy. We know. We're also known within our own national borders as being loud, arrogant, and obnoxious.

Thanks for seeing that many of us try NOT to be this way, especially not when representing the USA to the rest of the world.

This is so true and has been for a very long time. Many years ago when i was back packing around the world I would often see back packers with their national flag sewn on thier pack. I didn't even sew the Americal flag on my pack. It didn't help getting rides when hitch hiking like a New Zealand flag would (for example).
Becuase of my habit carrying very few clothes and buying local clothes, and my abiliety to speak other languages people seldome ever suspected me of being an American. I was frequiently embarrased by the behavior of other American tourists I encounted.
