Going to Maui 3/17/12, any recomendations?

  1. Leaving Saturday 3/17/12 for 7 days with my hubby, 19 yo daughter and 11 year old son. My hubby and I went for 20th anniversary this last October for 4 days so we have already been to Hana and we went to the aquarium. We are not into the fancy restaurants. We are staying at the Grand Wailea (again). Its really nice there. Just looking for extra ideas...good places to eat..snorkel..etc. thanks.

It's been a while since I played tourist on Maui. Some things that I would recommend are:

Go to the top of Haleakala (You can look over the Alenuihaha Channel and wave to Poi)

Visit the Sugar Mill Museum in Puunene (disclaimer: my first trip to Maui was to do of-fseason maintenance in the sugar mill; so I might find that more interesting than some people.)

Ride the Sugarcane train in Lahaina

Visit the Whalers Village Museum in Lahaina

Maui Tropical Plantation is interesting (as I recall).

I would be sure and spend some time in Kahului at the Queen Kaahumanu Center. I like it because it is less "touristy" than the mall in Lahaina.

Have fun.. and be glad your vacation wasn't 10 days earlier. The weather has been pretty stormy in the islands with high winds and flooding last week. Oh, BTW, don't read "Airframe" by Michael Crichton on the flight out here either. If you really wanted to try out Alistair MacLean though, I'd recommend "When Eight Bells Toll" for your flight out. It's my favorite.

Hey K, you get major points for spelling the Hawaiian names correctly!

Can you pronounce them? I stumble over words particularly that have an ungodly amount of a's and u's.

Just got back from 2 weeks at the Ritz (in Jan.). We loved walking over to Napili Bay and snorkeling with the Sea Turtles. We also enjoyed the restaurant Kai sushi and Sansei. I would also recommend Gannon's and Plantation House restaurant. We had a blast going on the whale watching tours. I bet we saw 40 whales! Maui Coffee Co. is fun. A lot of antique machinery on display.

P.S. Went to Hana about 15 years ago and all I can say is thank goodness we flew into that airport, because the drive out was brutal. Did NOT enjoy it at all.
