President Trump confirmed that he approved a strike on Iran on Thursday after it shot down a U.S. drone but called off the operation after the initial moves were underway. Trump said he canceled the attack after being told 150 Iranians would likely be killed.

"We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights when I asked, how many will die," Trump said in a series of tweets Friday.

Upon hearing the projected toll, Trump said, he decided that the strike was not "proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone." The president said he put a halt to the operation 10 minutes before the strike was set to begin...

Nuclear weapons: experts alarmed by new Pentagon 'war-fighting' doctrine

US joint chiefs of staff posted then removed paper that suggests nuclear weapons could ‘create conditions for decisive results’

The Pentagon believes using nuclear weapons could “create conditions for decisive results and the restoration of strategic stability”, according to a new nuclear doctrine adopted by the US joint chiefs of staff last week.

The document, entitled Nuclear Operations, was published on 11 June, and was the first such doctrine paper for 14 years. Arms control experts say it marks a shift in US military thinking towards the idea of fighting and winning a nuclear war – which they believe is a highly dangerous mindset.

“Using nuclear weapons could create conditions for decisive results and the restoration of strategic stability,” the joint chiefs’ document says. “Specifically, the use of a nuclear weapon will fundamentally change the scope of a battle and create conditions that affect how commanders will prevail in conflict.”

A spokesman for the joint chiefs of staff said the document was removed from the publicly accessible defense department website “because it was determined that this publication, as is with other joint staff publications, should be for official use only”.

In an emailed statement the spokesman did not say why the document was on the public website for the first week after publication.

Aftergood said the new document “is very much conceived as a war-fighting doctrine – not simply a deterrence doctrine, and that’s unsettling”.

He pointed out that, as an operational document by the joint chiefs rather than a policy documents, its role is to plan for worst-case scenarios. But Aftergood added: “That kind of thinking itself can be hazardous. It can make that sort of eventuality more likely instead of deterring it.”

Alexandra Bell, a former state department arms control official said: “This seems to be another instance of this administration being both tone-deaf and disorganised.”...

Feckless foreign policy that mistakes bigoted cruelty and military might with strength and wisdom.

Pay no attention to sick children sleeping on concrete, but look at the great and Powerful Trump as he makes life and death decisions based on whims. He zips off to pay golf, while promising pittances to farmers; rakes in hotel dollars while allowing polluters to pump garbage into the air.

The only thing that matters to him is praise from so-called admirers, be they dictators, Fox News hosts, or MAGA hat wearers.

What action should Trump have taken in this situation that would have satisfied you?

I am grateful that no attack was launched, however it is worrisome that this was even proposed, or that the situation ever got to this point. What I would have preferred is that the US would never have pulled out of the Iran treaty at all and that diplomacy would have been employed. This president only sees deals as unilateral (perhaps that is all his demented mind can do) and his only negotiating ploy is sanctions.

Also, I think the American people deserve an official press briefing, not a tweet or an interview with a TV host. I can't believe that Trump gives a second thought to Iranian lives, but he most certainly worries about ratings and the approval of MBS, Putin, Erdogan, and Netanyahu. And of course,  Hannity and Carlson.

I'm hoping that some ally convinces Trump that the Iran deal has been renegotiated and he should sign on.  Then he can once again tell his sycophants that he fixed a terrible disaster  (that he created).

We the people deserve a president who keeps us informed. BUT with this president he has called "wolf" enough that I cannot trust what he says.

Prayer and helping others is all I know to do.

Bolton was an incredibly bad choice for his position. Another in a long line of bad judgement calls by the Liar in Chief.

“For all the claims by the left that Trump is irrational, he understands that you can only bargain with rational actors. Iran doesn’t fit the bill.

Trump made clear this week that he’s willing to play hardball with Iran if they continue on their current trajectory. Calling off the strike just minutes before execution wasn’t indecision. It was a calculated move meant to send a message that the U.S. will not be intimidated back into negotiations by a radical Islamist government with a history of aggression.

Obama wanted his Iran deal at all costs, and those costs were steep. It amounted to access to more than $100 billion, ending most sanctions, opening the country to foreign investment, among other benefits for the regime.

Of course, a key component of the deal meant that fifteen years from signing, the whole thing went out the window anyway and Iran could proceed with their nuclear program.”

Well not unilaterally withdrawing from the Iran deal that Iran were keeping to and also not imposing tough sanctions would be a start.

But then so would Trump understanding geopolitics, something my dog understands better than him.

Trump and his lying sycophants (like Pence) want us to believe that Trump wasn't brief on the number potential casualties until moments before his military strike was launched. I would posit that only indoctrinated or foolish people would believe that bit of nonsense crafted to make Trump's incompetence appear as "restraint".
