It could be that they believe that the border wall will not secure the border or solve the "immigration problem," and that b)Trump promised numerous times on camera that MEXICO WOULD PAY FOR IT.

That in itself won't solve the immigration problem, but it a component. And, I haven't heard them say with much vigor that it would be ineffective. It certainly would be relatively cheap big obstacle. In the last 10-15 years, depending on the year 350000-1 million have been caught trying to cross illegally each year. How many have gotten through?

It's fair to hold Trump accountable for saying Mexico would pay for it. You can do that at election time. That's not a reason to not implement something that is needed.

The five trillion Trump is requesting is meaningless to both sides, but especially Democrats. They spend more then that per year on premium toilet paper for their offices.

And last week when they thought they had a deal, they were offering $0.

They are either not wanting to fix border security, or they don't want to give Trump a win.

IMHO, it's both.

I care because I wonder how we get Trump supporters to join with us in discerning and accepting facts after Trump is out of power. I wonder how we convince them that there was no conspiracy to overthrow Trump. There was simply desire to limit the damage done by a deeply flawed man in a position that he should have never been allowed.

I truly do respect you, baloney, and your opinion.

I think you know that.

But I have to ask you: How does that happen?

And it is an honest question.

I feel the task is akin to plucking someone off an isolated island, who has lived on that island for years, and adapted to life on the remote island, and expecting them to function in present day NYC.

Again, with all due respect, how does it happen?

His base can think the moon is made of cheese, and the earth is flat.

[...]

They aren't?

Next, I suppose you're going to tell me Santa Clause isn't real?

So Mexico will pay for the wall, everyone will have healthcare coverage, his tax bill won't benefit him at all, some neo nazis and white supremacists are really nice people, he didn't know about that payment, he found out about it later, I'll carry the mantle of the shutdown, I'll show you my taxes, and Obama wasn't born here.

When does his base stop ignoring the man's fundamental dishonesty?

There is no urgency that requires funding for additional border wall, at this very moment, outside of Trump's personal temper tantrum requiring it.

None.

What is Trump's political leverage beyond pointing fingers?

I care.

About Mattis, I was impressed by the candor of his letter in coded language. The way he laid out his values, and said that they aren't in alignment with Trump's. Mattis essentially said that Trump was disrespectful and ambiguous with our allies with a cloudy, rather than clear eyed view of our importance and position in the world.

Wow

Yes. Mattis sent a powerful message.

And of course, the things he said played out in Trump's decision to declare ISIS defeated, and remove US troops from Syria.

I said it was a Christmas present to Putin, and lo and behold, Putin praised the move.

It was also a gift to the authoritarian government in Turkey.

However, it screwed our allies in the region; the Kurds.

Yes, why does Dirty Donnie work so damn hard to gain the approval of Putin?

Have we done anything about the Ukraine sailors taken hostage by Russia?

Nope.

I would respect that but when Obama wanted 10 billion a year for education McConnell and Republicans said we couldn't afford it. So I have Zero respect for the idea that the wall is cheap.

I don't completely disagree with you. It's all a big game. They didn't want Obama to get what he wanted either.

I thought we werent supposed to discuss what happened during Obama's reign?
