In one of the more unusual cases coming to the Supreme Court next month, the Justices will hear a case about an Ohio law designed to keep people from making false statements during political campaigns, under the threat of fines and jail time....

... The law is called Ohio Revised Code Section 3517.21 and it explicitly defines what is called "impermissible campaign speech." That speech is defined as making false statements claiming a candidate has been indicted or convicted of crimes; making false statements that a candidate has a mental disorder; and making false statements concerning the voting record of a candidate or public official.

In fact, there are at least 10 different ways a person can make a false statement, according to the law. In Ohio, a violation is a misdemeanor with a penalty of up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine....

It would make it easier for those of us who value the truth. We have to do a great deal of research to get to truth. This last election cycle was so filled with the crassest of lies and half truths. It discourages many from following the elections or voting. I guess it could be considered as part of a master plan to only have those who don't bother to do research and vote as they are told, vote and those who seek answers to give up.

There is a great deal of money in lies. The truth costs little to nothing.

Isn't stuff like this already covered in laws regarding libel and slander?

Here in my cynicism...

Who are the people lying and cheating in this discussion? Are they poor or are they wealthy?

Only poor people go to jail for breaking laws.

I think we should use a Debate Survivor format to narrow down the field of Presidential candidates. Get them all on a stage and let them start debating the issues. If one calls BS on another we pause and fact check what was said. One lie and you're off the stage. Three bad BS calls also gets you kicked off the stage. Once we're down to 5 candidates they're told to shut up lest they lie and their names will be on the ballot.
