I recently participated in a jury selection process for a native American man. The defense attorney asked the panel if they thought the fellow could get a fair trial in the community. The consensus was "maybe", "we hope so". The final jury had only one alaska native seated with a total of 4 non white.
It was sort of shocking to hear some of the casual comments from young white men who seemed completely unaware of the racial prejudice that their remarks reflected, the lack of cultural awareness was so evident it was almost surreal.
I am not shocked that a white male who is a proud Trump supporter on AN chooses to believe that calling someone Pocahontas is an innocent bit of name calling not rising to the level of a racist slur. Heck, the leader of that kind of thinking thought it was okay to joke about calling someone Pocahontas (as a derogatory name) to elderly native veterans under the portrait of Andrew Jackson. There doesn't seem to be much empathy, compassion, or self awareness promoted within the voting base of the GOP.
I guess as long as they can simply deny the racism, lies, unethical/amoral/corrupt/ criminal/erratic behavior the conservatives will be pleased to reelect Trump.
