    The "I'm running away" thread

I would volunteer abroad (in developing countries) as a nurse too, so I could travel, travel, travel.

    Taking mentally ill off streets

In an effort to avoid being productive, I looked up some stats on the number & rate of people who commit homicide in the U.S. who have a mental illness. 16,259 homicides were committed in the U.S. in 2008. (CDC) 1,000 homicides a year are committed by people with a mental illness in the U.S.: 6% of homicides. (mentalhealthpolicy.org) 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. (NIMH) (seems high to me!) The number of homicides committed by mentally ill persons is not even representative of the prevalence of mental illness in the general population. My point: I question whether there is any correlation at all between mental illness & homicidal tendencies. Court-ordered treatment: Here’s a site that spells out state laws around the issue. The site is actually advocating to make it easier for involuntary treatment. http://mentalillnesspolicy.org/studies/state-standards-involuntary-treatment.html

Obama Proposes Increase in Minimum Wage

I am not looking up the unemployment rate in 1996, but it sounds like you are choosing to ignore hisotrical trends b/c this is, in your eyes, is a different economy. Based on that reasoning, it remains to be seen how the wage increase will affect the current economic climate...we are just speculating.

Obama Proposes Increase in Minimum Wage

& more people will be purchasing goods & services from these small businesses with a higher minimum wage. Quote from an article published by Economic Policy Institute: The impact of the minimum wage | Economic Policy Institute

President Obama HAS reduced the budget.

Is that just federal jobs? I feel like I've seen a fair # of hiring freezes, layoffs, & budget cuts at the state & local level too in recent years. Federal funding that trickles down has been reduced for some important programs.

Obama Proposes Increase in Minimum Wage

She was hilarious; I enjoyed it. I'm not an economist (neither is she), but I think what she's saying about the effects of raising the min wage is based on theory more than fact. FDR introduced the minimum wage during the Great Depression to help stimulate the economy, & it worked. Giving the poorest workers more spending power benefits businesses for obvious reasons.

    Taking mentally ill off streets

I totally agree on this point. Inpatient & outpatient Tx is a much better solution than homelessness & jail. PBS http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/asylums/special/excerpt.html T he article above discusses deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill from the mid-60s to the 80s in the U.S.. This reminds me of the discussion on drones targeting U.S. citizens. I can understand court-ordered Tx if they are currently homicidal or suicidal, & the threat is imminent. I don't think someone should be hunted down in the streets for non-compliance alone or for a vague suspicion they could pose threat in the future. I really think the answer is to empower people to actively participate in their treatment plan during periods of stability. More inpatient facilities offering more long term Tx options would be a plus as well. We would be taking steps back if we started stripping this population of their rights.

    Taking mentally ill off streets

There are plenty of people without a mental illness who act like a 12-year-old. Should there rights be taken away, or just those diagnosed with a mental illness? I think one solution is Advance Psychiatric Directives. It empowers the person to make decisions regarding their care when they are competent, so they aren't completely robbed of their rights in a crisis. NAMI | Psychiatric Advance Directives: An Overview

    Taking mentally ill off streets

I don't think anyone participating in this thread condones murder, or sees mental illness as a reason not to hold someone accountable for their actions. This really should go without saying. As wish_me_luck stated, it is a misconception that those with mental illness are responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime. Thus, targeting this population is discriminatory & foolish, IMO.

    Interesting article about God

I didn't take "bible classes"; I took collegiate-level courses that allowed scholarly review of the Bible. My point was I had the opportunity to study the bible & Christianity in a less biased forum than in a church. I am constantly looking for ways to apply the words of Christ to today's issues. My perspective is that he would not buy into the liberal or conservative ideologies of today. Jean Marie, I have no problem being challenged on the topic at hand, & I have no problem with opposing views. My boyfriend of several years was an atheist. He never attempted to make me feel like my view was inferior & misguided though. I'm not saying that's what you intended. I hope you return to the political threads. We need you there; you have been missed over the past few days.

Michael Moore opposes Obama's erosion of civil liberties.

Stalin killed millions, not for being terrorists & being a legitimate national security threat, but for suspicion that they opposed his party. While I do not agree with what the current Administration is doing, it is hardly comparable to the "Great Terror" brought about by that Communist dictator. Obama is not an "left-wing extremist" if you look at the political spectrum on a global level; in fact, he is quite moderate. We tend to have tunnel vision here in the good ol' U.S.A..
