    Domestic Terrorism

And it's going to keep happening as long as the NRA has a stranglehold on our legislators. Some would prefer we continue to martyr our children rather than take a serious look at gun control.

What are you talking about? This makes no sense.

    American Values

Agree with all of the above. Also, I think it is an American value to show compassion to those less fortunate. It is an erroneous, persistent myth that the poor are lazy. We tend to see people's circumstances as a reflection of their character, but excuse our own foibles as due to "bad luck". Hard work and a good education is no longer a guarantee for an easy life. A large percentage of the poor in our country work, sometimes more than 1 job. Yes, there are some who game the system, but that's the minority. I'd rather lose a few dollars to an undeserving recipient than 1 child go hungry, even if that child isn't mine. Consider yourself very, very fortunate if there is never a time in your life when you need some assistance. A civilized nation is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable.

    American Values

So I'm getting the feeling, and I hope I am wrong, that you really only care about what affects you directly. Do you understand that coal mining destroys the land, makes people sick, and the burning of coal contributes to the destruction of the environment? That coal mining in West Virginia can ultimately harm someone far away? Do you not care about the kind of destruction that can harm future generations, or do you not care because you'll be dead anyway? I guess you're just not a big picture kind of guy.

Morning- Work has been busy and there seems to be a serious morale problem among the staff. I'm just trying to keep my head down and see my patients, and not get caught up in all the negativity. A lot of it is justified, but the staff need to come together with solutions as opposed to just complaining. I'm looking forward to our quick trip to NYC Sat and Sun. I'm excited to find out which show we got tickets for on Sunday. I am not looking forward to driving back home by myself, as fiance will be staying in the city for a few more days for work. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive, so it's not too bad. Still cold and rainy here, with temps in the high 40s. We don't have Spring anymore. The cold lingers into May, and then it's 85 degrees. Bring on the heat! Hope all have a good day.

    The President Donald Trump Thread

A near-perfect summation of the Trump presidency in contrast to those who served before him. From Charles Pierce, in Esquire: "In my life, I have watched John Kennedy talk on television about missiles in Cuba. I saw Lyndon Johnson look Richard Russell squarely in the eye and and say, "And we shall overcome." I saw Richard Nixon resign and Gerald Ford tell the Congress that our long national nightmare was over. I saw Jimmy Carter talk about malaise and Ronald Reagan talk about a shining city on a hill. I saw George H.W. Bush deliver the eulogy for the Soviet bloc, and Bill Clinton comfort the survivors of Timothy McVeigh's madness in Oklahoma City. I saw George W. Bush struggle to make sense of it all on September 11, 2001, and I saw Barack Obama sing 'Amazing Grace' in the wounded sanctuary of Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. "These were the presidents of my lifetime. These were not perfect men. They were not perfect presidents, god knows. Not one of them was that. But they approached the job, and they took to the podium, with all the gravitas they could muster as appropriate to the job. They tried, at least, to reach for something in the presidency that was beyond their grasp as ordinary human beings. They were not all ennobled by the attempt, but they tried nonetheless. "And comes now this hopeless, vicious buffoon, and the audience of equally hopeless and vicious buffoons who laughed and cheered when he made sport of a woman whose lasting memory of the trauma she suffered is the laughter of the perpetrators. Now he comes, a man swathed in scandal, with no interest beyond what he can put in his pocket and what he can put over on a universe of suckers, and he does something like this while occupying an office that we gave him, and while endowed with a public trust that he dishonors every day he wakes up in the White House. "The scion of a multigenerational criminal enterprise, the parameters of which we are only now beginning to comprehend. A vessel for all the worst elements of the American condition. And a cheap, soulless bully besides. We never have had such a cheap counterfeit of a president* as currently occupies the office. We never have had a president* so completely deserving of scorn and yet so small in the office that it almost seems a waste of time and energy to summon up the requisite contempt. "Watch how a republic dies in the empty eyes of an empty man who feels nothing but his own imaginary greatness, and who cannot find in himself the decency simply to shut up even when it is in his best interest to do so. Presidents don't have to be heroes to be good presidents. They just have to realize that their humanity is our common humanity, and that their political commonwealth is our political commonwealth, too. Watch him behind the seal of the President of the United States. Isn't he a funny man? Isn't what happened to that lady hilarious? Watch the assembled morons cheer. This is the only story now." - Charles Pierce Like Comment Share

Morning- Sleepy today. I was supposed to pick up Fiance at the airport at 11 last night, but flight was delayed til 12:30 AM, then they couldn't land due to severe thunderstorms. At 1:30 AM the flight was diverted to New York and I went home. Driving was a little sketchy due to heavy downpours. We are supposed to be in CT (the state, not the procedure) at 11 for his niece's confirmation. He rented a car after getting about 2 hours sleep and I will meet him there. I'm tired, but I got more sleep than he did. J22-I'm sorry your day was so frustrating. Sounds like nothing went right. Hope today is better. Steph-Glad you had fun with your grandkids. The good Chinese food was a bonus! Stars-Hope the pain is less today. Tweety-Hope work goes well today. Joe-I'm jealous that you're seeing Hamilton. Enjoy! We're having the same weather you're having. Where did Spring go? Hope all have a good day.

Morning- I'm off work until Wed. I'm supposed to be using this time to clean out the basement, but the dumpster hasn't arrived yet and it's raining. Does that mean I can lie on the couch and read instead of cleaning? I'm currently attempting to make beef jerky in the oven. It's a good high protein low carb snack, but is expensive to buy and I want it to be additive free. I have the oven on convection so I hope that helps dry it out. The cats are very interested. Tweety-Glad you had fun at the concert. I didn't know she was 74, either. She seems to be in great voice. Hope your fog and funk lifts. Joe-Glad that your weight is staying steady. Have fun with J tonight. J22-Sorry to hear about the A-flutter. It does explain the fatigue. When do you see Cardiology? I hope the N-acetyl cysteine is helpful. Hey Nel, Herring, Dianah, Spidey's Mom, Ted (in the UK), NSIME, and everyone else who stops by. Hope today is good for all of us. Ooh, the dumpster is here! My day on the couch is ruined!

Hi all, Things have been a bit crazy at work, so I haven't had time to pop in. I didn't start til 10 today, so I had time to take a nice long walk before work. It was a little chilly, but the sun was shining and it's nice to see everything blooming. Joe-good luck with the interview! Nel-I read that book. Scary, but there were no safety rules then. Gotta run. Lots of rx refills and charting to do! Hope all have a good day!

    Saturday 4/13

Morning- Day 3 of insomnia. I've been up since 3 AM. I took melatonin, but it's not keeping me asleep. It's my Saturday to work. I'm glad it's only a 3 hour shift. I see a nap in my future.
  12. Morning- It's cold and gray here. Spring will return tomorrow. I'm tired today. The insomnia bug has been hitting me for the last few nights. I may have to increase the melatonin. Ted-your camera set-up sounds very cool! Can't wait to see your pics from your trip. I know you miss your dad very much, and it's ok to feel that some stress has been lifted with his passing. Take good care of yourself. Joe-Isn't it annoying when you're so close to your weight goal, and you can't lose those last couple of pounds? Hope J's root canal went well. Tweety-I would love the food in Japan! I could eat seafood every day. Your pics have been great. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Herring-Hope you get lots of good stuff at the Farmer's Market. I can't wait til they start up around here for the summer. Take care, all.

Good morning! Just got to work, as today is my late day. Lowe's delivered my new front door this AM, which will be installed on Saturday. It will be good to have a door that doesn't require Herculean strength to close properly. Other than that, nothing going on. I've been enjoying Tweety's pictures from Japan on FB. It's cold there! Hope all have a good day.

    The President Donald Trump Thread

Exactly. All the handwringing and pearl clutching done by conservatives who say the wall will stop these issues is bull****, in my opinion. The bottom line is that they just don't want brown people in the US. White Nationalism, aka "They will not replace us".

Why don't you read the article and see what it says, instead of making inferences from the title? Yes, there is a crisis, but it's not of the refugees' making. The crisis is that Trump and company have created a huge problem and are treating people inhumanely. It would be good if he would get off the golf course (remember when he said he would be too busy to play golf?) and off Twitter and focus on the job that some of us elected him to do.

I was able to access this article via the link you posted, and I don't have a subscription to WaPo. There is a crisis at the border, but the crisis is how immigration is being handled by the current administration. Trump is said to have enacted the worst immigration policies of any president.

Good morning! Glad that Tweety made it safely to Japan. Stay warm! It won't be getting out of the 40s here for a few days. The end of the week should be warmer. We're getting lots of April showers. Work is busy as allergy season has arrived. Hope all have a good day!

    Winning...the economy under Trump

I keep hearing this, yet I know about 8 people who are having difficulty finding jobs. They all have different levels of education, experience, and are looking in different industries. All but one are over 50. I wonder if there's some ageism going on, or if this is particular to my geographic area. I know I'm looking at a tiny microcosm, but it seems as though finding a job should be easier with this low level of unemployment.

Good morning- This has been a great work week for me. I only worked Mon, Wed, and Thurs. I wish I could do this every week. The staff at work gave the boss their "manifesto" that I edited, and it went over surprisingly well. He was receptive to their suggestions and thoughts. We will see if any real change occurs. In other exciting news, I just had my septic system pumped and thankfully, it is operating as it should. I live in fear of it failing, and needing to replace it at a cost of about $30,000. Joe-It's always good when someone is receptive to your work and suggestions. Glad the fast helped. I keep telling myself I should try intermittent fasting, but I can never to make to lunch without eating something! Tweety-I hope you have a good day, too! In fact, I hope we all have a good day today!

Good morning! The sun is shining and it might hit 50 today! W00t!! I just have to get through today and then I have 3 days off. I'm getting the septic tank pumped tomorrow (I know, you're all jealous!) and might treat myself to a pedicure. We're celebrating fiance's b-day tomorrow night as he'll be away on his actual b-day. We'll have dinner, and then I'm taking him to see an illusionist show. He loves Penn and Teller, and the performers we are seeing work in a similar style. Shhh...it's a surprise. They only perform for 50 people at a time and it's in an old mansion. We are supposed to dress semi-formally. and they serve drinks. It should be fun! Tweety-Hope today goes well. I think I would feel very confined if I worked in the OR. I need windows and natural light for most of the day. Joe-Did you do a true fast with no food and water, or are you doing intermittent fasting? Nel-Sorry yo're dreading going back to work this weekend. Look back at what you posted...your typo made me smile. I didn't know your interests extended to chickens!! Hope all have a good day!

I do ok most of the time with time release melatonin. I won't stay asleep with the regular stuff. The stories about Ambien scare me a bit. I'd probably be the person who ate everything in the refrigerator while asleep. But, you gotta do what you gotta do to get some sleep!

    Presidential Election 2020

Again, I don't think he is a sexual predator. He may just be an overenthusiastic, clueless man who doesn't understand that his actions are not appropriate. I'm not giving him a pass, I just don't think there was ill intent. I could be wrong, of course, but I don't put him in the same league as Roy Moore, Bill Clinton, or even Trump.

    Presidential Election 2020

I have mixed feelings about the alleged creepiness of Joe Biden. I really like him and wish he had run in 2016. He is a bit too touchy-feely for my taste, but I don't think it's sexual in nature. I think he is a genuinely warm person who is affectionate, which is not always appropriate. He'll get my vote if he's the name on the ballot in 2020, but I will support whichever candidate the Democrats put forth. I'm trying to learn more about those who have declared candidacy, and observing to see how things shake out.
