I simply believe that in a open and free society healthcare needs to be more equitable. Basic healthcare needs to be more of a right, and not a privilege. I don't think this is socialist - I think this is smart. It seems that preventative and basic care saves money. Lots of it. I am not an expert, by any stretch of the imagination, on the AHA. I do know that something had to change. The current model is broken, and I see it everyday working with both the "haves" and the "have nots". Even if this isn't the best move, at least someone is doing SOMETHING. I have family that is staunchly anti-Obama / anti-Obamacare. They are also among the fortunate ones that have never been without insurance (very good health insurance, at that).
  3. Birdland is great - played it many times in high school and college. In honor of today's date, can I add a video of one of my favorite songs? I always feel better when I hear this... [video=youtube_share;Gs069dndIYk]

I think it is because people suspect that you really are Oscar the Grouch (and I mean that in the nicest possible way...), and hope to find some clue on your page...

    Are you happy being single?

I hear ya on the 2 hours distance... EXCEPT that I was not at all sure I was interested enough to make that drive often, and if they came to me - then what if I can't get rid of them?!? What if they start leaving a toothbrush, or want a drawer cleaned out for them?!? And, the kiss of death for social lives everywhere - I work 12 hour night shifts. Probably one of the BEST things about being single is traveling alone. Sweet sweet freedom. Switching to days soon. It will be interesting to see how the other half lives again.

    Are you happy being single?

No, I am not. I was, when I was much younger and before I met "the one". Well, things didn't work out with him and I in the long run, but it spoiled me for the single life. When it was good, it was the best thing ever. Before, I didn't know what I was missing. There is a lot that is good about being single, but it certainly gets lonely and I have been single a long time. It isn't a life I would choose, but there are certainly worse things. And, to be honest, I often feel defensive about being single. So sick of people questioning my sexuality (I doubt I could form a lasting relationship with a woman either!) and sick of feeling "abnormal" because I can't get a date. To be fair (to myself) I have been asked out a couple times in the last few years. Both guys lived over 2 hours drive away. Really?

I just read this entire thread and I am now worried what that says about me. I do like the Wizard of Oz though. Wasn't it more special before VHS/DVD, you know, when you could only watch it that one time a year when it was on network TV? Being able to watch any time you want took some of the magic away for me... I was a Lollipop Kid in a production circa 1983. True story. I also like cupcakes.

    Jury duty summons!

I don't believe the employer has to pay you, only provide for the time off. At least in the two states where I've served jury duty. In the times where I was employed FT, I was paid by my company. I only tried to get out of it once - when I was young and in college for the first time - summons was for finals week. Judge didn't care, but I only had to be there one day (in a notorious midwestern city - it was interesting and I've served there twice in my life). I made it through to questioning once down south, but was not selected. I assume it was because of the emotional break-down I had when they asked about our ability to consider the full range of possible sentencing. Long story, but it hit too close to home. I was juror number 5 during the questioning, so I would have been in by default had I not been excluded. This trial would have had the jury for the verdict and sentencing - I would have been OK with just the verdict part. Still, it was a long day , but VERY interesting. And embarrassing - nothing like hyperventilating and sobbing in a room full of strangers, lawyers, etc. the defendent was probably like "WTH are YOU crying about?!?" Anywho, it isn't my favorite thing to do, but it is interesting and important. I hope to never be on trial, but if I am, I hope jurors show up and try their best =)

Are "Pet Names" Inappropriate on the Job?

I agree that Intent is key. I start (with my patients) with Mr or Mrs so-and-so. If I know them a little better, with women who are older than me, I'll say "Hi Miss First-name". If they are around my age or younger, or if they ask me to, I'll just use first names, or their nick-names. I just love it when I call a 80+ woman "Mrs. Smith" and she says "Don't call me that - that is my mother-in-law!" In theory, I don't care for the "honeys-darlings-sweethearts" to the patient, but I do find myself using these terms when patients are distressed or if we are doing something that causes pain (repositioning, etc). Maybe I lived in the south too long. What I do not like at all is baby-talk. As for what others (patients) call me, I don't really care. We get alot of elderly, rural farmers and transplanted southerners... As another said - just don't call me late for supper!

I often click on profiles of users I find ridiculous, to see what other ridiculous things they have posted. I accept that others probably do that to me, too. I also accidently click on user names more often that I care too admit. Apparently I have become mouse-challenged (don't get my started on charting in our fab new EMR). I am now totally going to look at your profile. But not because I think you are ridiculous. Necessarily. PS - 1,415 for me. I feel kind of special. Or ridiculous.
