Trump Team Killed Rule Designed To Protect Health Workers From Pandemic Like COVID-19

Quote

OSHA experts were confident new airborne infectious disease regulations would make hospitals and nursing homes safer when future pandemics hit. That's because similar rules had already been created for bloodborne pathogens such as Ebola and hepatitis.

Those rules, implemented during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, forced the health care industry to adopt safety plans and buy more equipment designed to protect staff and patients.

But making a new infectious disease regulation, affecting much of the American health care system, is time-consuming and contentious. It requires lengthy consultation with scientists, doctors and other state and federal regulatory agencies as well as the nursing home and hospital industries that would be forced to implement the standard.

Federal records reviewed by NPR show OSHA went step by step through that process for six years, and by early 2016 the new infectious disease rule was ready. The Obama White House formally added it to a list of regulations scheduled to be implemented in 2017.

Then came the presidential election.

An emphasis on deregulation

In the spring of 2017, the Trump team formally stripped OSHA's airborne infectious disease rule from the regulatory agenda. NPR could find no indication the new administration had specific policy concerns about the infectious disease rules.

Instead, the decision appeared to be part of a wider effort to cut regulations and bureaucratic oversight.

"Earlier this year we set a target of adding zero new regulatory costs onto the American economy," Trump said in December 2017. "As a result, the never-ending growth of red tape in America has come to a sudden, screeching and beautiful halt."

The impact on the federal effort to protect health care workers from diseases such as COVID-19 was immediate.

"The infectious disease standard was put on the back burner. Work stopped," said Michaels, now a professor at George Washington University

I guess, a few trillion dollars and a cool 100,000 American dead are a reasonable trade off in Trumplandia.

I heard this story tonight, while driving into work.

Trump's deregulation moves, allowed for this to happen.

Hurry up November!

What do you think happens between the election results and January 20 should Trump lose?

I imagine we will see those heavily armed Right-Wingers trying to illegally ensconse their leader.

Governor Beshear eloquently addressed the Right-Wing extremists problem during his nightly press conference.

He said he won't be bullied.

He said he won't back down.

To the politicians who egg on these extremists, then say: There is no place for this behavior...

He said: You cannot fan the flames, then condemn the fire.

Andy Beshear is a leader.

One of the Right-Wing extremists who hung him in effigy, has been fired from his job.

He need to find a place to work that welcomes terrorists.

May be ISIS has an opening.

You can read coverage of Beshear's remarks last night, in today's WaPo:

'You cannot fan the flames....

You can see a picture of two, overweight White guys hanging the effigy from a tree.

And you can read about one of them being fired from his job.

He apparently belongs to that racist Right-Wing group the 3 percenters.

‘You cannot fan the flames and condemn the fire’: Kentucky governor blames GOP for protest with hanging effigy

As Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” blared from speakers, protesters supporting the Second Amendment and opposing coronavirus restrictions strung a stuffed effigy of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) from a tree outside the governor’s mansion on Sunday.

Republicans and Democrats alike quickly denounced the scene, with Beshear calling it a “celebration of assassination on our capitol grounds.”

But on Tuesday, Beshear also laid some blame for the violent imagery on Republican legislators in his state, whom he accused of contributing to the increasingly tense atmosphere at protests of restrictions...

...   Kentucky House Speaker David Osborne said he and his fellow Republicans were “outraged” by the violent imagery displayed on the Capitol grounds....

...    Neil Huffman Automotive Group, which runs several car dealerships in Kentucky, said on Tuesday the company had fired an employee involved in the incident after an internal investigation. “There is no place for hate or intolerance in any of our dealerships,” the company said in a statement...

Another day, another liberal act of corruption and hypocrisy ignored by the MSM.

"Hidden in Cuomo’s budget, released separately from the nursing home orders, though, is a provision seemingly exempting nursing home executives from liability in cases where elderly individuals and facility patients fell ill with COVID-19. The provision, according to Fox News, says that officials “shall have immunity from any liability, civil or criminal, for any harm or damages alleged to have been sustained as a result of an act or omission in the course of arranging for or providing healthcare services.”

Thank you for posting, herring.

The majority of Kentuckians approve of how Beshear has handled CVirus pandemic.

We are equally impressed with his response to such a vile display of hate.

As I have shared, he often reflects on his faith, during the pandemic crisis.

But last night, he said that his faith compels him to face adversity, but not to lose his values while doing so.

Such, eloquence!

His parents raised up a good man.

Perhaps, but that donation was in 2018.  Nursing homes are currently lobbying hard for immunity.

McConnell is lobbying for businesses and corporate immunity to prevent employees from suing employees too be to be exempt as well.  One can twist perhaps it's because he's gotten a lot of donations from corporations and businesses.

The faux outrage is touching.

Very touching.

But here is a Truth, dude. It comes from the NY Times, from 3/14/20.

Trump Administration Is Relaxing Oversight Of Nursing Homes

Read the article, dude.

It details how nursing home infections will probably increase thanks to Trump's moronic move.

One could then conclude that it would become easier for things like CVirus to flourish in nursing homes.

I guess Trumpsters have moved on from faux outrage about child hunger and suicides.

Again, very touching.

😒
