Anybody ever had a dog on trazodone?

  1. Our shih-tzu had a major trauma as a pup, involving a very low-flying jet that passed overhead 3 times in 10 minutes (stupid ****** pilot!) and he's forever-after been extremely frightened of loud, booming/roaring sounds.
We have tried most all of the 'natural' pet-calming products on the shelf, also the stuff that is supposed to replicate mommy-dog's phermones, and the thundershirt. All to no avail.
He's been on Xanax for a while and that really helps him, but due to an excessive amount of thunderstorm activity requiring prn dosing (with vet's permission) he has run out and the pharmacy won't refill for 3 weeks! Our vet tried to call in a change on the dose/frequency but due to Xanax being a controlled substance there is no such thing as changing horses in mid-stream of a prescription.
Rather than make the poor little feller endure the summer weather pattern of afternoon thunderstorms AND be defenseless for the dreaded July 4th firecrackers and fireworks displays ( that he can hear even if they are just far away little 'pops') the vet has prescribed Trazodone. We pick it up tomorrow, so here's hoping!
Just wonder if anyone else has had a dog on this drug.

Trazadone working sort of okay.....I'm not sure we'll keep him on it, though.

Have you tried Diphenhydramine HCL, No Stars? You know- Benadryl?

I Heard Tale that Benadryl was the Original Doggie Downer. And its Chemical Structure is Closely Related to Hydroxyzine HCL, even though the Pamoate-Base is Suppositively better, and is used as the Non-Benzodiazepine Anti-Anxiety, Vistaril...

I agree with Daveydo....I would try benedryl It has a sedative effect...can't your vet order another med or a new prescription? I know my dog was in a fire...not the one in the picture...she was very anxious after the fire and certain things would set her over the edge...she got Valium and it worked like a charm.

Benadryl--been there, done that. Does nothing.
I'll ask about the valium today when we go to the vet.

    How is your baby dog?

Well, he is doing well. I wasn't totally convinced the Travadone was helping at first. He still gets the shivers from the inside-out but they don't seem as pronounced. He still hides under the bed, but you can't hear his teeth clacking. So, it hasn't taken away the fear but it seems to have tamped it down some.
The TRUE test will be the fourth of July!
