I'm feeling it. Can I use the crusty old bat thing? Is there a secret handshake or an annual educational forum or something I need to attend? Or can I just copy it in?

Honestly, I was a COB before I was even licensed as a nurse!

Going through nursing school with unprofessional, uneducated people put me right over the edge from the beginning... seeing people playing on their phones while they should be doing their clinical work, or having people turn in two sentences that they copy/pasted from a website as their "contribution" to a five-page group project.... ARGH!!!!!

^^^This...yes! It started in A&P, first semester of pre-reqs, sitting in the front row listening to students give their 1,001 excuses to the professor as to why they didn't get something done or needed an extension to take an exam

I will always remember my first exam. It was 8 pages long, front and back. About 15 minutes into the exam students started turning them in. I thought "holy crimeny, I must have been seriously ill-prepared for this exam!!" I found out some time later that those students put their name on the exam, answered one or two of the easy questions and then gave up and turned it in. It was the mother of all "weed-out classes" as we started with around 88 or so students and 17 of us were left at the end of the semester :wideyed:

It always amazed me the number of people who screwed around or just never even showed up...then wondered why they didn't make the cut.

YES YES YES!!!!

These witches in the back row, who were applying nail polish all through the lecture, then when the instructor asked if anyone had any questions, they said, "Yeah, I don't understand."

Instructor: What don't you understand?

Witches: Any of it!

Instructor: You don't understand a single thing from the past two hours of lecture?

Witches: Yep!

Instructor: Did you have trouble with anything in particular that you read in the assigned chapter?

Witches: I didn't read the book. You have to realize that we have jobs and families and lives outside of this class, you know!!!!

The poor instructor... she didn't know what to do with someone like that, and there was a whole row of them who sat through two hours of lecture and never uttered a word until the very end!

And the REST of us, who also had jobs and families and lives outside of the classroom, HAD read the chapter and followed along in class!

You had to pass the class with a minimum of 80% to get admitted into the nursing program.... guess who all ended up complaining to the dean when they didn't make the cut? The instructor opened up the grade book and showed that they hadn't passed ONE SINGLE EXAM all semester long -- the only reason they got Cs was because of homework credit -- and the dean made the instructor pass them all at 80%!!!!

Yep, I was a COB before I was even in the nursing program...

I don't understand any of this at all, how can an entire group of C students be passed on prerequisites simply because they complained? That makes no sense to me at all, and means that the nursing program must have been pretty awful in the first place to allow students like that in. Obviously you managed to graduate from there and become a nurse, but I wonder what happened to students like these? They would reflect badly on the quality of the program, lowering the NCLEX passing rates, so sounds like the dean was shooting himself in the foot in the end.

This was the dean of the science department, not the dean of the nursing department (physiology pre-req class). I think the science dean just didn't want to have to deal with it... they weren't going to be his students after this class was over, anyway.

And I don't think that any of those students actually got out of Nursing Fundamentals. I never saw them again for the rest of the program (no big loss there!).

This has really been enlightening... I had no idea that COB was a frame of mind rather than a characteristic of the (er, um) highly mature group of which I am a proud member. Welcome Younglings.
