Seasonal Affective Disorder - page 2

Just a question for those who are desperately seeking the sun like me... Have any of you tried light therapy and if so, what type of light box do you have? We have had minimal sun lately and I feel... Read More

I'm trying *really* hard not to jump on a soapbox in this thread. Please remember the risks involved.

If anyone wants a personal testimonial on what melanoma can do to your life (and your body), PM me.

Wouldn't it help to simply change the light bulbs to higher wattages and turn on a few more lamps?
    No eye rolling...just asking.

Hmmm.... after looking at my utility bill for last month.... that is NOT a good idea.

I agree with delirium! I personally know two people who's lives were changed forever because of skin cancer. Coincidentally, they both used tanning beds. One of them had only been going for about 2 months to get a base tan for a trip to Hawaii.

I have other friends who still use the beds, they both look about 10 years older than me and are my age. They have skin discoloration, flakiness, and many wrinkles.

I'm curious - How can tanning beds help SAD when your eyes are closed and covered w/goggles? Aren't you supposed to see the light for it to be effective?

For all of those concerned about the *cancer risks* of light therapy...the full spectrum lights that are used in the treatment of SAD do NOT contain UV rays and are not assoc. with cancer...These FULL SPECTRUM lights are needed to affect the area of the brain that is responsible for regulation of the sleep-wake cycle...Use of a tanning bed will not give you adequate results and, yes, would be a cancer risk...My true intent in posting this thread was to find out what, if any, TYPES/BRANDS of light boxes people had experience with...Sorry for starting any mini-wars on the cancer thing...That wasn't my intent

    I don't believe a "mini-war" was started.

Differing opinions... that's what we get in a public forum. Everyone's got a soapbox. You can stand on yours, and I can stand on mine.

Where is the best place to buy a lightbox?

Dag-Nabbit! I was smack in the middle of a "mini-war" and didn't even realize it!

I have GOT to learn to pay more attention!

I too am affected by SAD. If it gets really bad and I feel depressed I too go to the tanning bed. It really makes me feel better. I get tan in the summer just by being outside so a little bit in the winter can't be hurting me. I hope I never have melanoma but I know a lot of people who live in Florida and are always tan and they aren't affected. I can't live and be afraid of everything.
