KKK Plans to Protest 'Gay Day' at Dollywood

May 19, 2004

Gfn.com News

A group of Ku Klux Klan members say they plan to stage a protest outside the Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., on Saturday, when a group of gay men and lesbians are expected for a second annual ''Gay Day" event.

About 20 KKK protesters will demonstrate against the group's attendance outside the park, Klansman Randy Gray told The Tennessean.

Gray said his group organized the protest because Gay Day is ''totally opposite of what theme parks are for.''

''Theme parks have always been for families. They're going there, I believe, to rub it in our faces, to be like 'ha, ha, we're finally getting our way,'" he said.

Gray, a known Klansman in the area according to area police, said he learned of the event on the Web site of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a hate-group monitoring organization.

Dollywood officials have contacted police, who said they will increase patrols around the park on Saturday.

Dollywood spokesman Pete Owens said, ''Dollywood is a private company, and it's private property. A group that is not part of the Dollywood company is not allowed to demonstrate or distribute any literature on Dollywood property.''

Gray said his group will find a place close to but not on park grounds.

Last year the Gay Day event drew about 1,300 people but no protests, said Ryan Salyer, executive director of the Knoxville-based gay, lesbian and transgender group Tri-Cities Pride, which organized the event.

This year, Salyer said he expects around 5,000 attendees from as far away as New York and Philadelphia who plan to attend the gathering.

The outing made headlines earlier month when the organizing group ran into a trademark controversy when Dollywood lawyers asked the group to stop advertising the event as ''Gay Day at Dollywood.''

The event's Web site had previously advertised the "Gay Day at Dollywood" event featuring the Dollywood butterfly logo and a cartoon likeness of Dolly Parton.

Dollywood spokesman Pete Owens said the park was not trying to stop anyone from attending. The request, he said, was a standard one sent out to anyone in regard to trademark violations.

Since contacted by the theme park, the Web site removed the park's logo and changed the name of the event to "Gay Day 2004."

For Saturday's event, Salyer has asked attendees to wear red shirts to identify the group in hopes "flooding the park with a sea of red shirts."

Oh, this is priceless -- 'cause, y'know, the Klan represents wholesome, Christian, American family values, not like those godless, perverted homos ... :rotfl:

As an American and a Southerner, I am SO tired of rednecks like the KKK making the rest of us look like a bunch of ignorant bozos whose family trees don't branch! :(

If I didn't have plans tomorrow, I think I'd make the drive up there & start talking to the Klansmen about their idiotic behavior...I wonder how many of them are purveyors of pornography...spouse or child abusers? They make me ill with their double standards & inablility to speak their minds (oops, my mistake, they haven't a single mind between them) without covering themselves with masks to avoid being identified. They have no courage and no honor.

Between this & the recent flap about banning gays from living in Rhea County, Tennessee, I am starting to reconsider whether this is truly a good place to raise children. Some days it feels like ignorance is crowding in from all sides, with few of us making way for the light of education.

Enough. I've said my piece.

This is too bad. The fam and I vacationed in Gatlinburg last year and we spent a day at Dollywood. It was a fun, low-key vacation. The crowd there wasn't exactly diverse but everyone was friendly enough. I hope their reputation won't be tarnished by those terrorists.

First let me say that I do not agree with or support the KKK or any other hate group. But I must ask this question.... Why do "gays" have to have a day? Why do they want to flaunt their sexual preferences? Why can't they just attend and enjoy Dollywood like the rest of us and not feel they have to "flood Dollywood with red" to show everyone that they are "gay"?

My family and I enjoy going to Dollywood and have a trip planned there next month. I am just thankful it will not be during "Gay Day'.

Oh geez...and why are you thankful? because your kids might see them?

I'm just disgusted by the whole thing. Any group who wants to has a right to have "their day" anywhere they choose if it is a public place. If the KKK wants to have a "kkk day" at Disneyworld...they have the right. Not saying I would like it, but they have the right and yeah, I probably wouldn't want my kids to see them, but they spew hatred where gays do not. They are persecuted for loving one another.

Why do nurses have to have a day? Or a week?

Never even knew "Gay Day" existed. Learning something new everday.

It's always soooooooooo nice to know that the KKK still has their priorities in perspective .

CNM2B, my kids are all grown. But I do not want my grandchildren to be exposed to that lifestyle. Just as I don't want them exposed to any other life style that is against my beliefs. And yes, even though it may be politically incorrect, the homosexual lifestyle is against my belief as a Christian.

Again, I personally do not see why anyone has to have a "day" that they publically flaunt their sexuality. As I said, why can't they just come to Dollywood and enjoy themselves along with all us other people and not make a spectacle of themselves.
