Hello,

After hearing some good things from fellow nursing students, I recently rented and watched episodes 1-4 of the first season of Nurse Jackie, a Showtime cable series.

In the very first episode, the main character:

1. Snorted the contents of what appear to be time release capsules on the job.

2. Banged the Pharmacy Tech in the med room. (Yep, she's married with two kids.)

3. Forged a dead patient's donor certificate.

4. Received stolen Vicodin from the Pharmacy Tech (along with a moon pie) in exchange for the sex.

5. Purposely flushed a patient's ear down the loo. (Patient had repeatedly stabbed a prostitute for fun.)

6. Howls in panic, clawing at the Plumb IV cartridge instead of merely stopping or disconnecting the IV when she notices she almost killed the pt by hanging the wrong bag.

Great. Thanks for that. The show is fine and entertaining as a dramatic show, but really doesn't do much for the image of nurses in general. The nursing student Jackie picks up in the first episode is hilarious and there are some realistic aspects to the show. "Do you know what they call a nurse with a bad back? Unemployed." Love the DON-type character admonishing Jackie about the patient dangers associate with working too many hours right before asking, "Can you do a double on Thursday?"

To be fair, the show does have moments of Jackie as super-nurse patient advocate, but it would be tough to balance out the other stuff.

Oh, I almost forgot, male nurses in TV land are apparently all gay. Super cool, hip, sassy and competent BFFs, but all homosexual.

Of course, you cannot judge any occupation by how they are portrayed in a dramatic TV series, but this one is at best not helpful for the image of nurses.

I just have to say that I LOVE Nurse Jackie. It's a TV show...Therefore, the unrealistic aspects are just as entertaining as the realistic ones...It's like saying that House portrays doctors in a bad light.....

Can't get enough.

I am so sick of hearing about nursing's image. We are still trusted and highly regarded. And really, I don't want to watch shows about saints. All perfection, all the time.

Amen, greenfiremajick. In the same way that "Moby Dick" doesn't define the plight of all whalers, nor should "Nurse Jackie" stand as the only representation of nursing. If we're critiquing nursing-related shows, I found Jada Pinkett-Smith's "HawthoRN" to be infinitely less believable completely overrun with stereotypes, and, more offensively, filled with blatant inaccuracies, than "Nurse Jackie". It's a fictional story, and a very well-written one at that. I thought that since the show was in its second season that these nay-sayers had been put to rest. If you don't like the show, then do what I did with HawthoRN - don't watch it! Stop re-hashing the complaints from the previous season. If you need your fill of Jackie-bashing, do a search and follow the old thread. Blerg!

That's exactly why I came into this thread! Have been wanting to see it forever because I'm too cheap to get premium channels on cable. :D

Also - if you're concerned with the image of nurses, you should be attempting to change your practice and the practice of the nurses around you. Stop relying on a television program to do it for you.

Can you read?

I have never relied on a television program to do anything for me and certainly never stated so in my review (you get to put your opinions in a review) of Nurse Jackie. See, this is a nursing board so I included my take on the TV portrayal of nursing in the review. Certainly in bounds for the content of the board. I would not do the same if I was just discussing the show with friends.

The show was very entertaining in some aspects, but I found the portrayal way over the top in some areas. I'm going to rent the rest of the season.

Get over yourself. I reviewed the show based on the recent release of the DVD of the first season. This information appeared to be helpful to those who didn't know the DVD was released.

Thank you Intern for your thread. And thank you Jen for the link. I will now go watch some episodes so I can come back and complain about how nurses are portrayed as well!! :yeah:
