You are reading page 79 of ixchel's What I Learned This Week 10/3.... If you want to start from the beginning Go to First Page.

I have a student issue and I really don't feel like getting torn apart for being a crusty old student but I actually need some advice. *sigh*

Wish me luck in the trenches.

Good luck! Let me know if you need backup!

Are there any nursing conferences you guys go to?

NTI is going to be in New Orleans next year from May 16-19!!!

Three exclamation points required.

Seriously, I have always wanted to go to New Orleans, and I have always wanted to go to NTI, so this may just be a match made in heaven. Especially if I can get my employer to pony up and give me some funds. It would be prohibitively expensive otherwise. I mean, I really want to go, but I don't want to go bad enough to spend well over $1000. Probably more like $2000 when all is said and done, honestly.

I have a lot of trouble throwing down that much cash ever.

The worst part about getting my employer to pay for NTI is I'd have to hang out with my coworkers. All of my coworkers who went to NTI this year were my least favorite coworkers. I really don't want to share a room with someone I don't like.

I've been wanting to go to NTI. I have not attended any nursing conferences but I did get to go to a conference for my first field of study in New Orleans back in 2001. Aside from the fact the fact it was late August and hot as blazes, it was a blast! Would like to see it now after Katrina.

Let's go, then - I'll meet you there. :)

This is totally random, but I have been really thinking about what organ/system I like working with since a lot of people threw out theirs, and I have decided that I really don't like working with a single organ at all. They're all boring by themselves. I like any problem that hits in such a way that multiple systems are affected.

I might just have to pick a favorite patient type instead of a favorite body system. I like septic patients and post-codes. They tend to have the most stuff going wrong and the biggest chains of events to watch out for.

I go to CHAPCA - Hospice Conference. Last year was Las Vegas and this year Long Beach.

And I've been to the NASN (National Association of School Nurses) once when I first started my job as a school nurse. This was in SF.

I've been to many conferences. The first one with nursing was a Med-Surg Conference in SF. Great fun! I've been back to SF for a few others as well.

I'm not totally crazy about sharing rooms - depends on the roommate. This year I'm sharing with a great nurse who is also a smoker. She's pretty careful about where she smokes. Last year in Vegas, I roomed with a smoker as well but heck, you are in a hotel/casino and it stinks of smoke anyway.

I love education - every Friday there is a "Grand Rounds" in our county from one of the hospitals which usually last 1.5 hours. It is part of our telemedicine instruction. Last week was about Palliative Care. A few weeks ago SIDS. There is a 4 hour Grand Rounds coming up on STI's.

You aren't required to have a certain amount of hours?

You can get CEUs without flying somewhere and spending a night or two in a hotel, though. You can do sad, boring online CEUs, alone in front of your computer.
