Much was made of the fact that Charles Whitman was a golden boy, Eagle Scout, and good family man. However, it's less well-known that for many months before he climbed that tower with his gun he had complained to his physician that something was wrong with him, that he was having intrusive thoughts that kept urging him to commit violent acts. He was very distressed by this and had a full psych workup (for schizophrenia, et al.) and nobody found anything. Bear in mind that this was many years before current diagnostic imaging was available and the understanding of the brain was not what it is now.

When they did the postmortem they found he had a small brain tumor in the area of the brain that is now known to regulate violent behavior, emotion, etc. He really did have something developing in his head that was making him crazy, and nobody knew how to recognize it. Imagine how horrible that must have been for him, given his background.

I remember that TV movie about him; in the credits roll it was noted he had a brain tumor.

It is true, women are picky. Yet, most women seem to like guys who are jerks, bums, and losers. I know, I have arrested many men for domestic violence. In fact, this issue hits close to home, my Aunt married a guy who beat her for 25 years. He even went to the point of kidnapping her from the local Federal building with a firearm. This was in the days before the 5,000 Security checkpoints. He was sentenced to a very long jail sentence and when he came up for parole, his own family wrote letters against him. Many times, most people really do not know what it is like to be married or they are in love with the idea of being married. Yes, some guys are exciting. However, sooner or later, that excitement stops and you will get tired of him being a jerk. I worked with an RN, who was a really good friend, but, husband was a total loser. The loser let the 13 year old son beat on her and did nothing to stop it. Along with many other things, I told her she needed to lose the jerk. She said she had thought about living with me. I said, "that is fine, but, I am not going to tolerate any trash from the loser or the son." In short, she went back to the loser and the son, who is about 18 by now, I hope he did not beat her. It really made me sad, she is a good person and I really liked her. Social skills are something that can be worked on, over time. It could be that women just treated him like dirt, played stupid games, trust me, there are many players. They played stupid games and he just could not take it anymore......

When I read stories like this I think of something I think often. I am bleeding heart liberal, but in the end, your pain and suffering does not make you special or unique. It just is. I think the shooters should remember that-- most importantly before they go about shooting people.

I agree. The shooters shouldn't take out their inner rage on innocent people who had nothing to do with their problems. The shooters needn't take their rage out on anyone, period.

It's time to do some serious introspection and look within. If every single woman had rejected this man in a 25 year span, he needed to consider some self-improvement to become the type of guy that women would actually want to date. Instead, he blamed his inability to attract the opposite sex on women and took the cowardly way out through murder/suicide.

Finally, if someone is miserable and wants an end to his life, he really shouldn't end the lives of anyone else. Totally not fair.

?aspergers?
Yes, this is certainly possible in some cases. Many people who have Asperger's are unable to pick up subtle social cues, so this may or may not create difficulties in the arena of romantic connections.

StNeotser hit the nail on the head - ENTITLEMENT! "Involuntary celibacy," give me a break. And it only affects males, wow, what a shock. What happens when women can't get a date? They get called losers and told all sorts of problems that they need to "fix." But if a man can't get a date he claims "involuntary celibacy" and he doesn't have to make any introspection.

Ooh, this sort of thing really ruffles my feathers, I'm sure you can tell. NO ONE is entitled to sex - except with their own self, maybe!
