I can't find an answer to this question anywhere else on the internet, so I'm reaching out to the best community I know.

Here's what happened. I colored my hair with a Clairol Color Gloss and rinsed it out two weeks ago. Now my the drain of my sink is clogged and has a thick black substance that looks like some kind of biofilm. I think the hair color caused it to grow.

In addition to donning gloves and scrubbing out the part of the drain I can reach, does anyone have any suggestions on how to eradicate this mess? Bleach? Lysol? Change of pH?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions! :-)

Perhaps contact a plumber?

Yes, I know that nobody wants to spend the money on a professional plumber unless absolutely necessary. However, eradication of biofilm from a sink drain is not really a task that most nurses are trained to carry out.

Late April Fools Joke?

I mean, really.

Dump some Liquid Plumber down there and call it a day.

I'm sorry, per terms of service, we're not allowed to give plumbing advice. Please discuss this with your plumbing care provider. Good luck!

My husband is a plumber - he said to try Drano first, see what happens.

Perhaps the bio film was already there and the dye colored it...

I'd use vinegar or bleach

If it's a true biofilm only mechanical force (i.e. scrubbing) will remove it. I agree with another poster that maybe the dye just colored it so you can see it. I don't see what trying Drano or something similar will hurt before resorting to calling a plumber.
