What does this cartoon mean? A man and a woman, each with a live chicken under their arm, facing each other, with the woman saying, "I don't know what to say, meeting you here like this".

An appropriate statement, but why are they each carrying a live chicken?

I don't know, but in reviewing some of my cartoons, this one made me chuckle.

A request has been made that I compile some cartoons that I believe to be my best.

Now, "best" is subjective. What one would consider a treasure, another may think it trash, right?

Rifling through my Trove of Toons, I decided that the criteria for my best would be ones that entertain me the most. So, I plan to post on the Blue Side my favorite non-nursing cartoons and on the Yellow Side my favorite nursing cartoons.

I also plan to give some background on what inspired the cartoon, for the vast majority of my cartoons are based on actual events.

The cartoon above is an exception.

I think.

What if we used live cephalopods instead of plastic ink cartridges in our printers and copying machines?

A nurse I work with was having trouble copying something and said, "I think it needs a new... oh, what are those things that have ink inside of them?"

A Tech spoke up and said "Squids?"

I live on the side of a valley where the bottoms will flood from time to time and there are caution road signs that warn of the possibility of water covering the road.

What if the signs were not of the caution variety, but of the entertainment for spectators variety?

When I was about 15 years old, the band American had a hit with a song titled "Horse With No Name". The song had great lyrics with lyrics that could stimulate a lot of visual imagery, like "The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz"...

Inspiration comes in all forms. Sometimes just considering old adages like "The squeaky wheel gets the grease".

The squeaky wheel could also be a mouse who would find it a blessing to get greased by Fr. Grease Gun.

One of my favorite lines from the movie "The Wonder Boys" could be interpreted concretely:

I was just playing with some different concepts with this cartoon. You know- what type of funeral would Colonel Sanders, if he was also a Christian Minister, give for a dead chicken?

The legendary explorers, Lewis & Clark are quite big in this area, making their first camp just south of where I live, and "The Gateway to the West" being just across the river.

There are signs for historical markers and all sorts of businesses use the dynamic duo's name.

Just about every sign or logo pertaining to Lewis & Clark use a silhouette image with the two standing and gazing while one of them points.

I thought, "Well, they weren't always standing around and pointing! They had to take a bathroom break now and again!"

In using the Lewis & Clark silhouette, I came up with an idea for some signs:

The bastardization of the concept of "an otherwise unpleasant situation can be pleasant when a pleasant aspect is deliberately introduced" coupled with an iconic image:

Or something like that.

Thanks, Ted!

You being a Music Man might appreciate this one-

I hear a line from a song in my head, something like an ear worm, and I am driven to illustrate the line in an alternative perspective rather than its intended meaning.

This one's from James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is":

I also enjoy illustrating conceived scenarios.

Like, what if Captain Hook flipped off Jack Sparrow?
