Hello - I have a stupid question. Any idea how to get tar off a dog? Long story, but not sure of the correct answer. Any suggestions welcome. I plan to take her to the vet in the am if it's still there.

WD40. I got the better part of 5 gallons of it off the back seat of the car one time with it.

Use coal oil. This is how we took tar off the cars that got splashed onto it from the roads after they had been resurfaced.

You could also try using butter! Just don't let dog lick tar as will burn stomach.Work well in then use something like Fairy liquid to wash off emulsified tar.

Thank you all for such great hints. My dh and I got a new car, not "new new", but "new to me". We got a Dodge stealth and it needed some work. Dh pulled off one of the door panel and hasn't gotten it completed the work yet. The door frame has a small amount of tar. My doggie Sissie and I had been out in the heat paying bills and the tar got hot. Sissie was hanging a little bit more on the door and by the time I got her down, there was a little on her neck, of course the only whit spot on her!

Thank you all for your replies, and for not thinking I am just crazy! The last dog I had, Sam, got into my purse one evening and ate 2 tubes of lipstick and a months worth of Adipex diet pills. Teach me to put up stuff out of reach!

The ER vet was more worried about the lipstick until I clued him in on what Adipex, then he freaked out. And Sam was so funny looking when I caught him in the act. He looked like a clown, with bright red lipstick all over his mouth, had to be 2 inches around his mouth, and on all four paws!

Thank you all for the great responses. Sissie is all better, and you guys saved me a trip to the vet. I plan on being much more careful with her in the car.

She's my little "tar baby"!

back when lucy (who died last month) was a pup, she had a thing for ink. she chewed up dozens of pens, but the capper was when we'd just been to office max to buy a new color printer cartridge. we left the bag lying on the coffee table and lucy helped herself. picture a white standard poodle lying on a pale grey carpet and covered with multi-colored blotches of ink! after chewing up the cartridge, she rolled in the ink -- she was quite the sight! we ended up ripping out the carpet and putting in hardwood floors, and the color did eventually wear off the dog. she was a conversation starter everywhere she went for awhile, though!

Shaving the fur off may well have been an option! If my boy had tar on his coat, I'd cut as much off as I could, then shave what I had to!

(he's a Lhasa Apso furball bTW!)
