Ok, instead of complaining about the media's portrayal of nurses per se . . .I'd have to say I was a bit peeved last night at the portrayal of single moms.

Let's see . . . the new nurse with the unruly son who moves around so much that he has no roots, hates his mom and calls her names and runs away. When he is brought home and put in his room she shares a boozy hug with the doc who found him while her son peeks at them through the door and then later she walks in with beer bottle in hand, leans over to kiss her son goodnight and all you can think of is the kid smelling his mom's boozy breath. sigh . . .:o stereotypes aren't limited to the handmaiden nurse.

Where are the strong women role models?

I know, I'm one of the people who says it is just a tv show. But I was really struck by the image of the boozy single inept mom last night.

Kind of struck a funny chord in me, as well. But then, I was a kid in a single parent family with an alcoholic mom.

She wasn't drunk though. I think I would have needed a beer if I couldn't find my kid, and he finally turns up...I dunno.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that the nurse and the doc will be gettin' together.

Never pictured Luka as a great role model for a kid, or the fatherly type, but it looks like that's where the story line is heading.

Boozy doesn't necessarily equal drunk:D

Yeah, Luka is not a great role model. The kid will bond with him and then Luka will dump his mom.

Or maybe she will turn Luka around, they will get married and live happily ever after. :D

Luka was a father before. Remember his wife and daugher(i think) were killed in Croatia before he came to the show. Maybe if he gets involved he will become a better role model for the kid.

Ahh...okay, I didn't know that. I have just started watching ER again after many years. Well, then, it kinda makes sense. That may be a good story line developing then.

Luka is a hottie (well, whoever the actor is in real life...can't remember). I did like the way the nurse didn't act like a submissive twit and spoke up to Luka about the bandage on her sons arm, etc. Might be a good TV love match, LOL.

BTW...I am not much of a television viewer at all, but I haven't missed an episode of ER yet this season. Hope they don't disappoint me, I may just throw my TV away... :chuckle

I seem to remember a son and daughter and his wife dying in the bombing of their apartment.

Yeah, that would send anyone over the top. Maybe being a role model for another kid would help.

I can't believe we are discussing fictional characters!:D

BTW, I don't know if everyone knows this...TNT shows 2 episodes of ER every morning (at 10 & 11 here) in sequence...anyway they are starting it all over again, on Monday the 24th they are showing the 2 hour pilot episode. Carters first day...Hathaway's suicide attempt. I have never seen it.

I had never even seen an episode of ER when I came across this very episode on TNT. I usually am cleaning house or doing laundry this time of day and was flipping through the channels. I decided that I would give it a whirl since I'm in nursing school. Maybe it would be interesting to me now that I'm on my way to working in that type of setting.

Since that day, I have tried not to miss it. Today was great...I can't remember who said it, but a nurse told the tall black doctor that it was the nurses who made things work around there, not the doctors. Also, I found it funny that the nursing staff snuck up to the cardiology unit to take back their crash carts that Carole had just managed to get for the ER. It's taking me some time to know everyone's name and figure things out, but I have already noticed some indiscrepencies with how the real world of nursing works and what the show portrays.

I think Abby starting to question the MD thing again just based on the past couple of shows. My prediction is that she is going to discover that she really enjoys nursing more and will go the advance practice/NP route and use the money for school in that manner.

Just a guess. I think it would be cool. It would show viewers how many options are available with nursing.

Yep, Abby may not do well on the boards. Did anyone else catch that 52% score she got on the practice test, hee hee!

This one all took place in Africa. Basically, Carters new women is pregant and he wants her to give birth in the US. The rest of the episode just showed how they got together. It was honestly quite a snoozer.:zzzzz
