Have others seen this? I've got mixed feelings about it, since I like Dr. Murthy and the Trump administration is relieving him of his position for partisan reasons, but, for the time being, the acting US Surgeon General is a nurse.

Vivek Murthy, MD, Replaced as Surgeon General

And the nurse was the Deputy SG under Obama, so maybe not so partisan after all. And she has a Ph.D, so we should be addressing her as Dr. anyway.

Dr. Murthy holds his replacement in high regard. This post directs public health, not surgeries. I think a well qualified nurse is an excellent choice.

I agree with tntrn and azhiker - this is an excellent choice and not partisan. What a great opportunity.

As an aside, for those who listen to ZDoggMD . . . he's doing a live show today at about this subject.

And tune in today 4 pacific/7 eastern for #AgainstMedicalAdvice with Tom, Logan, me, and Mrs. Dogg MD!

I wasn't suggesting that she was selected for partisan reasons -- she was made acting SG because she was second in command in the department. My reference to partisanship was, as I said, that Murthy was let go for partisan reasons.

perhaps Murthy was not reselected for partisan reasons. Nothing new in that. It is a four year appointment and a quick check of the list on Wiki shows only one who served longer than four years in the past 60 years.

I agree. I'm highly suspicious of false equivalencies, but this is not one of them. Politically motivated appointments are par for the course, regardless of which party is in power.

What's different about Trump's appointments is the selection of people dedicated to the sabotage of their respective agencies. This leads me to believe that the current acting surgeon general will quickly be replaced by someone more inimical to the whole idea of public health.

And that's quite an understatement (which may be how you intended it ...) :)

He was co-chair of a physicians' group supporting Obama prior to his election. His confirmation hearings were long and contentious, mostly over his position on guns and gun control, and he is a strong supporter of the ACA and strong regulation of e-cigarettes. The gun and tobacco lobbies, as well as conservatives in general, have been strongly opposed to him from his initial nomination. Now they can do something about it.

I'm sure Trump will find some quack to replace him soon, and also give Trent-Adams the boot. Maybe someone who shares his views that vaccines cause autism. (Maybe he could appoint his NY concierge physician who supposedly wrote the letter about his health during the campaign! :))

Since he put Carson in charge of Housing, maybe he could put a slum lord in charge of health.

Judging from his education secretary,EPA head, and Supreme Court nominee, maybe he should make a health insurance CEO the surgeon general, to make sure that as much tax dollars as possible can be shifted to private industry.
