The presence of an armed good person has been more effective at stopping mass murders than gun free zone signs. Guns are also used defensively much more often than the media would lead you to believe. However, it seems many of the occasions don't make it to mainstream media.

People who own and use guns are much more likely to see these stories than people who hate guns, hate the NRA, and wish both would disappear. Some may think the idea of an armed citizen acting responsibly is a fantasy. These incidents say otherwise.

So, to start things off.

In this from California no shots were fired. California Woman Had Gun Held to Her Head by Armed Robber, but She Has a Surprise…

The woman told the suspect that her valuables were stored in a safe. When she went to open it she didn't pull out money or jewelry, she pulled out a handgun that was stored in the safe.

Once the armed robber realized he was now facing an armed victim he turned and fled the residence without further incident.

There's no doubt about it, guns can save lives. I suppose this is important to consider when 100,000 shooting injuries occur each year that overshadow these stats. I'd be thankful to that good guy with a gun.

I think people are getting his message, did you see the link I posted that more and more people are buying guns and arming themselves? Here in Florida when the economy tanked in 2008 (were thriving once again) one industry thrived and that was guns. We have shooting ranges, huge guns shows, etc. It's still a thriving industry: Florida Hit Nearly A Million Background Checks For Guns In 2013

There is a downside though: » As Firearm Ownership Rises, Florida Gun Murders Increasing

So despite mainstream media, and liberal outrage, the trend is good people are getting guns.

I remember Miss Tuff. She is quite a remarkable woman and is very lucky the shooter in that case did not kill her. The principal at Sandy Hook was not as lucky.

Black Friday set a new record for gun sales. A lot of that is a direct reaction to words of the President and some Presidential candidates. Every time someone of note calls for more gun control, sales go through the roof.

Which usually co-incides with a mass murder.

Do you mean a mass murder happens and then gun sales go up? That's true.

If you are saying that gun sales happen to go up and then a mass murder happens, I'd like to see that research.

Just came across this meme on FB - the comment section is interesting but there are thousands of comments and I'm headed to bed. (edited to add - I can already hear the counter-arguments to this rolling around in some of your heads. ). ;)

Yes this. Mass murder occurs. Fear occurs. Liberals are outraged. Gun reform advocates "there's coming for your guns and you're not safe if people were armed this wouldn't happen". Fear...gun sales go up. Murder rates go up and another mass murder and the cycle repeats itself.

The same thing happened when the economy tanked. People were fearful because it was all doom and gloom and gun sales rose (at least in Florida it did)

Meme's like you posted are relatively immature and not helpful in my opinion. Show me a the evidence that gun control advocates say no one is going to get shot. To bring our gun murders down to European levels (yes people get shot over there) we'd have to take guns away from a whole lot of people like Australia did. That is never going to happen in my lifetime. Never.

Still crime and gun murders might be on the decline, but it remains to be seen if that's a trend for the long term. One can hope. But with our staggering amount of violence we have a long way to go.

However, the comparison of our failure to stop drugs and stop 100,000 people getting shot, maimed and killed perhaps is a good one.

I think there's a lot more agreement for utilizing "good people with guns" than is recognized. That's the basic point of currently proposed gun laws; to make sure whenever possible that it's good people who have guns rather than bad people (universal background checks), and to reduce the availability of firearms designed to defeat or limit the effectiveness of the good person with the good in a mass shooting or other offensive attack.

Because not ALL the places allow ANY guns.

I was being immature and wasn't expecting an answer. However, that's a bit simplistic. While it's true that mass murders tend to be in public places, and if you say no open carry gun or concealed guns are allowed in those area I will take your word as I'm too lazy to research that. Still the total number of mass murders is small compared to the 100,000 a year total gun related injuries and deaths.
