I do not believe and will never believe that someone should be canceled by anything other than the market . . . . .Rush has had other controversies in his career and this one won't be the last and it won't cancel his show.
I agree, but make no mistake, you are not the market in this case. You are the commodity being sold.

The show will not be cancelled if and only if the companies buying your attention think there's an economic advantage to be had by promoting his particular style of shock jockery.

If enough ratings points, ie people, walk away he's history.

My take on the subject is here:http://allnurses-breakroom.com/us-po...118-page8.html

I don't necessarily think Bill Maher is more hateful on a more continual basis. I would say Bill's opinions are equal in frequency to Rush's with regards to commenting on the political oppostion, AND NOT equal in intensity. From what I've heard and saw on Bill Maher's show in the past, he seems less intense than Rush. However, with all of that said, I don't like Bill Maher either. I don't think he's funny and I don't care for his style of political commentary. So, I don't watch him.

Jon Steward and Stephen Colbert, on the other hand, are definitely "my cup of tea" to when it comes to both humor and political commentary. They both admit, Jon especially, that they're comedians first and foremost. Oh. . . and they both better represent my politics as well.

    Flame away. . . HA!!!

    roflmao!!!

just watched the 2011 video you posted, heron! freakin' funny! even colbert couldn't keep a straight face while doing his shtick! lol!

amy and i saw the colbert show live a couple of years ago. he's just freakin' funny. the writing is just brilliant. and, quite frankly, the commentary he's "presenting" during his shtick is usually spot-on the mark.

back to the topic. . . what was it?!?!? oh yea. . . rush. . .

I disagree with you wholeheartedly on this statement tntrn. I watch Bill Maher's show every week and I think the man is brilliant. I'll admit, he is a little harsh and judgmental on religion, but other than that his opinions are spot on. From what I've heard from most Bill Maher haters they dislike his absence of religion and straightforward opinions on politics and drugs. Can you explain what it is that makes you fine Maher so "hateful"?

Blech, indeed ... but back to blech for a minute

In my view, Limbaugh has earned his living preaching a single version of conservativism by way of "humor" that is based on dehumanized, ugly and and terrifying stereotypes of the people he disagrees with: the castrating feminist, the "uppity" Negro, the fascist "greenies" and so on ... and on ... and endlessly on ... It's a kind of free-associated expression of subconscious fear and loathing that strikes a non-rational chord in a lot of people.

(Side note: how come no one called Godwin's Law on the whole feminazi routine years ago?)

It's his hook ... his schtick. I think it's reasonable to wonder if eventually his emotional scorched-earth business plan might just turn around and bite him in the butt. I've said before, I'm not at all sure that this is the time ... but it will come.

As to steph's question, "And has she ever heard of Planned Parenthood?" The Planned Parenthood that provides free and low cost contraception to women without financial access elsewhere? The Planned Parenthood that conservatives have been working desperately to destroy a la ACORN? That Planned Parenthood?

ETA: Try googling Rush's statements on Planned Parenthood. Somehow, I don't think he would agree with steph's idea of it's being a viable alternative.

I recently got satellite radio and was scanning through the channels last night on the way home and came across Howard Stern.

That disgusting vile man is on the air and has hoards of followers, mostly from the left side of the equation. He calls women all kinds of names and in the 30 seconds that I landed on his station, profanity including the "F" word spewed forth.

I'm a fan of Rush and his show and listen almost every day. He has always used the idea of illustrating absurdity by being absurd. Sometimes he goes overboard.

There is a lot more to this story - including the background of this so-called "student".

And has she ever heard of Planned Parenthood? I spent the entire day with my daughter yesterday who lives in a college town and just about every girl in town goes to PP for birth control issues.

I do not believe and will never believe that someone should be canceled by anything other than the market . . . . .Rush has had other controversies in his career and this one won't be the last and it won't cancel his show.
Yeah, let's make this about the " so-called student" and defend the victim Rush when he was only just "going overboard by illustrating absurdity by being absurd". "You're a **** and a prostitute and I want you to make porn films." "Opps...wrong choice of words...but really I'm the victim of liberal hate because I've always used absurdity to illustrate the absurd".

    OK

There can be issues about the student and what she was saying, what she does and she doesn't do, and you should feel free to discuss that. But in the context of supporting the names he called her, that's disappointing.

The market might dictate ratings, but many is the guy who has been fired or chased away from their job for being over the top...think Imus.....Howard Stern was given so much grief by the Feds and the public that he went to a private medium that's free of such controls. (Nice attempt at a deflection away from Rush by talking about Stern btw)

But I will give it to your man yet again. I've said it before he's brilliant at stirring up controversy and keeping himself in the limelight,

how do you know that most of his followers are from the left side?
any sources citing aforementioned, would be awesome.
it's notable that in 1994, "stern announced his candidacy for governor of new york under the libertarian party ticket, ..."
howard stern - wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...
so i'd be esp interested in learning who his followers are.

I'm not supporting the names he called her and I said he does go overboard sometimes. I heard this whole thing last week live and even I - the right wing wacko conservative Christian - thought he needed to back up and not use that language.

I was not deflecting - I just find it fascinating that a few posts back someone mentioned how much they love Bill Maher and thinks Bill is brilliant. I truly think that "who sounds brilliant" depends on where you sit. Which we've all said over and over again here. I liked Bill Maher when he first started as he gave it equally to everyone but in a more sardonic tone. Now he singles out conservatives and religious people and he does it in an ugly and hate-filled way. He's nasty. In my opinion. But I am not calling for him to be taken off the air. I just don't watch him anymore.

i didn't say it excused rush - i said he went overboard. i'm glad he apologized.

as to howard stern's audience - i shouldn't have said "left leaning".

men with 13 year old boy's brains and women who have no respect for womanhood would be a way to characterize the audience. however, i don't have facts and figures. i just cannot imagine a grown-up listening to him. but hey, that's just me.

the show was popular among males aged between 18 and 34, a highly-marketable demographic for advertisers
