I've always had a special place in my heart for the space shuttles. I was thrilled every time (right after I was startled) by the twin sonic booms heralding their imminent arrival at Edwards AFB. I would often race to the TV just to watch it land, feeling happy and relieved to see the little puffs of debris as the wheels hit the runway, especially after Challenger and Columbia.
I live close to JPL here in Southern California. I do hope I can see the shuttle swoop down to 1500 feet as it finishes it's victory lap and lands at LAX piggyback on a passenger jet.
Godspeed, Endeavour. See you at the California Science Center!

Since you leave nearby you may want to attend the yearly JPL open house.
Open House - NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
There are lots of kids but this old lady has attended many. Lots of good projects going on now. meet scientists.
There will be one in 2013. I don't think the date is announced yet.leslie :-D likes this. - Sep 20, '12 by nursel56Thank you, Herring! I'll make a note on my calendar. I would love to attend one of their Open Houses.
Sort of funny aside from the CHP concerned about traffic on the freeways, as the shuttle plans to fly over several landmark spots across LA County . . . they are cautioning motorists "do not gawk and drive". :-)herring_RN likes this. - Sep 20, '12 by iteachobThey should have left the Endeavour in Houston. Californians are complaining about trees that had to be cut down in order to get the shuttle into it's new home.Jolie likes this.
- Sep 21, '12 by nursel56I think most Californians are happy to see the Endeavour come back to it's home state.
Besides, if it had stayed in Houston, this would not have happened. I'm getting old. I reserve the right to be sappy.
- Sep 21, '12 by tewdlesThe video of Ms. Gifford and her husband watching his "spaceship" fly by was worth a billion words...how cool!
- Sep 21, '12 by TweetyYou're not being sappy, better to be sappy than like post #3. It was the lead story on the news here that day. Florida hated to lose the Endeavor but I'm sure it's new permanent home will be a good one.

First about 15 minutes ago flying east from the ocean and not far north of my house.
And just now further north.
People are coming out of homes and businesses taking pictures.nursel56 likes this. - Sep 21, '12 by nursel56How cool, Herring! Just finished watching the coverage here on KTLA. They had people stationed at many of the flyover locations. Wish I could've seen it but heard the engines as it roared overhead. The flight over Griffith Observatory was really breathtaking. When it taxied to the United Terminal it turned gracefully as an orchestra played Fanfare for the Common Man.
Tweety, I hadn't really followed the pre-story as to how they chose California over Florida or Texas. I hope it didn't get too ugly or mercenary as I know those bidding wars can be.
There is a Twitter hashtag #spottheshuttle where people are uploading their pics of Endeavour and where they were located. That should be fun to look at later on.herring_RN likes this.
