    The nanny state continues.

I wonder if GM is going to show photos of the death and mangled bodies that occur from driving automobiles.

    And now:

Tony the Tiger, some NASCAR drivers and cookie-selling Girl Scouts will be out of a job unless grocery manufacturers agree to reinvent a vast array of their products to satisfy the Obama administrationís food police.

Either retool the recipes to contain certain levels of sugar, sodium and fats, or no more advertising and marketing to tots and teenagers, say several federal regulatory agencies.

Although the intent of the guidelines is to combat childhood obesity, foods that are low in calories, fat, and some considered healthy foods, are also targets, including hot breakfast cereals such as oatmeal, pretzels, popcorn, nuts, yogurt, wheat bread, bagels, diet drinks, fruit juice, tea, bottled water, milk and sherbet.

People have a choice to smoke or not. At least, with these pictures, there should be no frivolous lawsuits from people who claim they didn't know that smoking could hurt them. Time to grow up and take some personal responsibility for one's choices.

I don't have a problem with honest depictions of the results of choices. That includes images of aborted fetuses, images from slaughter houses, and the before/after crack pictures. That's not nanny state. That's letting people know what can or does happen with a certain choice.

Canada has had graphic cigarette warnings for at least 10 years, along with high cigarette taxes. Plenty of Canadians still smoke.

Smoking rates are declining in Canada. New smoking rates for Canada and Quebec

Smoking rates are also slowly dropping in the US. U.S. Smoking Rate Still Coming Down

I really think higher taxes does more than the warnings on the packages to discourage smoking. Still, it doesn't hurt. I do wonder what will be next though, maybe warnings on fast food that it will make you fat.

But the taxes collected are used to fund health care for children, so if the purchase of cigarettes plummets, so will the tax collected, and who's then going to pay for the health care?
