Children react to "controversial" Cheerios commercial

  1. 11 I saw this on facebook the other day and thought it was pretty awesome. Evidently a Cheerios commercial that featured an interracial couple caused a little bit of "controversy" so some awesome people decided to show it to a group of kids and get their reactions:

I, for one, hope Cheerios does one with a same-sex couple next.

The advertising company who came up with this ad was genius. It's gotten so much press they didn't have to pay for. I think I saw it 10 times before I heard about the controversy. What I thought: really cute kid, really messy floor. Until it was pointed out that the couple was interracial, it didn't even register in my mind.

So the only people who were upset were commentators on You Tube or were there more? People on YouTube will complain about anything. Nice video.

This was an awesome video. This just goes to show that children are born with pure hearts, and parents are the ones that have a huge influence on their children in regards to what they believe. I almost cried listening to the honest truth from these kids. Just wonderful.. Some smart children!!

The sad thing is, there probably are kids who would see something wrong with the commercial - kids that have already been brainwashed by closed minded people.

This was the first time I'd seen the commercial. I thought it was cute!

When my son (8yo) heard that I was watching the commercial, he responded, "Oh, I've seen that commercial! I thought it was really funny. But I bet the dad didn't think it was funny when he saw the mess of the Cheerios." When I told him that some people were mad about the commercial he gave me the you-have-three-heads look and asked, "But....why?" Me: "Because the mom is white and the dad is black." Him: "I didn't even NOTICE that the dad was black."

We also live in a biracial household, so our kids see it as perfectly normal that mom is white and dad is brown, if they even notice it at all. We're just Mom and Dad.

I just saw itna few days ago. I just roared when I saw the dad with Cheerios all over him. Great commercial. The rest of it didn't bother me at all.

All I noticed when I watched that commercial were the Cheerios all over the dad. I had to watch it a few more times before I noticed the racial difference.

After all the hubbub began, I had an email from my cousin's daughter on the opposite coast. Her little girl was four about six weeks ago.
She has bright red curly hair. Her question after watching the ad?

Why when she had curly hair and the little girl in the ad had curly hair too, why did the "other little kid's" hair look different from her hair?

Pretty good question, if you ask me.

Little story here. My parents are both white. My father is an English protestant, my mother an Irish catholic. When I say that, I mean that is where they were actually born. When they got married in London in 1963 many family members wouldn't turn up for their wedding. Obviously I am a result of that wedding.

I've got a cousin who is a priest who was born in Iran. His father is Iranian. HIs father is probably the only Iranian catholic I'll ever meet. My cousin, his brother and his sister were introduced to me rather suddenly in 1979. British idiots would call my cousins "Pakis" out of ignorance.

I'm so glad that being of Irish heritage in a nation other than Ireland is good. It certainly wasn't seen as good in Britain. Thank you America. I can't hide from my heritage much, I'm short, got red hair, thin etc.

America has been awfully kind to me, but I can't help thinking its because they think I'm somewhat WASPy.

What would liberals find upsetting about this type of ad...the type of feelings that they would negatively indoctrinate their children with?
