I try to eat a salad with every meal and I recently read that spring mix or romaine lettuce is better because it is more filling and ice berg lettuce is mainly comprised of water. What are your thoughts?

The healthiest lettuce is, of course, the one you will eat!!
Seriously......there are many people, especially Baby Boomers and older, who didn't grow up on farms and thus never saw any lettuce other than iceberg. It was the only kind available in the stores and served in restaurants when we were young---I don't think I even tasted Romaine until I was in my late teens---so that's what a lot of us 'old folks' prefer.
For myself, I still like iceberg lettuce better than any other kind, but I've learned to enjoy other types of greens in my salads, including spinach. It's been a steep learning curve; I was not brought up in a veggie-loving household, and I loathe spending time in the kitchen so it's a good thing that prepackaged salads were invented!
Romaine lettuce is definitely better for you. And in my personal opinion, better tasting also. A lot of people prefer romaine hearts, which is the crunchiest part of the lettuce. They sell packages of the romaine hearts if that's what you like. But, the nutrients are in the darker green areas of the leafs. Try it as a fattoush salad... my most favorite dish in the whole world!!
I never had iceberg 'til I came to this country.. and thought what the heck is THIS stuff ???? :chuckle
Thankfully, my ex MIL taught me how to grow a good garden up in CT., and I grew all the GOOD stuff.. various types of lettuce.. the green leafy kinds, also "ruby"...
Iceberg really has little nutritional value at all.. it's tasteless and without texture. Blech!
When I think of what I spend on those bags of lettuce I cringe. My mom always had a leaf lettuce garden going. She would put it under glass and we would have fresh lettuce from March thru November. You have to keep watch, the animals love leaf lettuce and if you don't keep it covered they will eat more than you.
I like iceberg lettuce b/c that's what we used at home; most burger joints used it on/in their food, etc. It's a cheaper lettuce. But I love romaine and spinach as well, so I just mix them all in my salad for variety.
I prefer spinach at home....I'll take iceberg if I'm eating out, but I love my homemade salads! I had a spinach one with brocolli, carrots, mushrooms, and cheddar cheese, with a little ranch, and salt&pepper chicken shreds on top. YUMMY!
I will avoid eating iceberg lettuce at all costs if I can. Personally, I prefer romaine or the mesculin mix. Not sure what's in the mesculin blend but there are tons of dark leafy greens and some other colors that I wouldn't normally buy on my own. Most places where you can put together your own salad have mesculin as an option in addition to romaine. Lately one of my favorite salads is baby spinach (that way i don't have to cut it!), chopped walnuts, craisins and goat cheese. My dressing of choice is olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette with a dollop of dijon mustard mixed in for a little extra flavor. Also, one of my classmates from nursing school was a huge salad fan and introduced me to a salad seasoning. It's by McCormick, the makers of other spices, and it's just called Supreme Salad Seasoning. It's got tons of flavor and you don't need much of it. Any other salad suggestions?
