ABC News, Amy Bingham Sept 18th, 2012: Who Is Mitt Romney's 47 Percent?

Mitt Romney gave up on winning support from nearly half of the American electorate in May, telling wealthy supporters at a private fundraiser that he could not hope to win the votes of the 47 percent of Americans who, he said, do not pay federal income taxes.

The comment was part of a 30-minute speech riddled with controversial statements which was secretly videotaped and posted online this week. In it, Romney characterized that group of income-tax-free Americans as being "dependent on the government" and feeling "entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it."

So who are these 47 percent of Americans that Romney is not going to "worry" about winning over?
In 2011 those 76 million people, about 46 percent of the people who filed taxes, did not pay a penny in income taxes, according to an analysis of IRS data by the bipartisan Tax Policy Center. But that does not mean nearly half of America skirted their federal tax burden.
Nearly two-thirds of the households that did not pay income tax in 2011 were on the hook for payroll taxes, a 4.2 percent tax that is automatically deducted from workers' paychecks to fund Social Security and Medicare.

Only 18 percent of tax filers did not have to pay either income tax or payroll taxes.

Nearly all of the people who did not pay either type of tax were elderly – 10.3 percent of total tax filers - or had incomes less than $20,000 – 6.9 percent.

But it's not just low-income people who get out of paying income taxes. About 1 percent of the top 1 percent of income earners, those making about $533,000 or more, did not pay income taxes. That's roughly 13,000 tax filers. ...

...About 38 percent of Americans rely on the government for their health care, according to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Whether they are low-income and get their care through Medicaid (54 million people), are elderly and receive insurance through Medicare (46 million people), are low-income children and are covered under the Children's Health Insurance Program (5.5 million kids), or are current or former members of the military and receive health care through the Departments of Defense or Veterans Affairs (12.5 million people), more than 109 million Americans get their health insurance through government programs. ...

  4. The man is trying to close a deal...period. That is what he does, that is how he made his fortune.
    He should NOT be president.
  5. Well, we cannot afford the other guy....if he manages to put the country in a hole, in every way, like he has done in the past four years, we are toast. When asked the question, "are you better off now than four years ago?" my DH and I have to answer a resounding "NO!" not even close.

We fear for our freedom to speak freely (the little video maker was taken out in the dead of night for that), we fear for our national security (our embassies are not protected with ARMED guards on 9-11 anniversaries), we pander to one religious group to the detriment of an an entire nationr, our President has time for entertainment shows like Letterman or parties with rappers, but not for a meeting with Netanyahu. How is any of that an improvement?

We are on a downhill path......and I hope there are some of those who are on government support (means tested, not paid in taxes like SS or Medicare) who truly do want the chance to start taking care of themselves instead of continuing to make a lifestyle of dependence on the government.

  6. We will have to agree to disagree on the direction this current president has taken the country. I saw a country that was losing jobs the way a chemo patient loses hair when BHO took the oath. In the interim I have witness the economy turn from catastrophic job losses to a job gain trajectory.

I cannot fathom voting for a candidate who is not honest, is not transparent by ANY stretch of the imagination about ANYTHING, lies repeatedly even when called on it, and has NO reasonable foreign or domestic policy plan. Kicking it down the road doesn't float with me.

And for the record, people are encouraged to speak freely, it is not the fault of the masses or the media if the individual's speech is obnoxious, bigotted, or offensive.

The film maker spoke freely and has been taken into custody for it. Dead of the night. Does that sound like being encouraged to speak freely to you?

Filmmaker linked to anti-Islam video meets with probation officer | CNN
The California man believed to be the maker of an anti-Islam film that ignited a firestorm in the Muslim world was cooperative when authorities escorted him to a voluntary interview, officials said Saturday.

The overnight meeting with a probation officer came a day after federal officials said they were reviewing the probation of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who was convicted of bank fraud in 2010 and placed on supervised probation for five years. Whitmore told CNN that Nakoula left the local sheriff's station after the federal officials were done interviewing him.

Karen Redmond, a spokeswoman for the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, said Friday that Nakoula's federal probation was under review.

While on probation, Nakoula can't access computers or any device that can access the Internet without approval from his probation officer.

Nakoula served one year in federal prison at Lompoc, California, but officials couldn't immediately determine whether Nakoula paid any of the court-ordered restitution of $794,700, according to probation department officials and court records.
I guess Islamophobic bigots on probation for bank fraud charges should get a break.

The fact that he is not a big fan of Islam is a separate issue. Very coincidental that his bank fraud charges surfaced the same time his film was seen by a handful of people.

It’s more than the bank fraud charges; he may have broken his probation. He was questioned on 9/15, four days after the Cairo/Libya incident and the video had been viewed by more than just a handful of people. I guess that’s what happens when someone puts a video on youtube.

He had been ordered not to own or use devices with access to the Internet without approval from his probation officer -– and any approved computers were to be used for work only. "Defendant shall not access a computer for any other purpose," the terms read.

Restrictions were also placed on him enlisting others to get on the Internet for him. LA Times

wouldn't you expect for a background check to be run on the person being detained?...
and a person who was already on probation?
i guess i am not understanding why it'd be considered coincidental?

I find it, at the very least, curious that his probation/bank fraud thing surfaced exactly when the film made the news. Very curious, indeed.
