The birth of a meme: swiftboating Obama

  1. 1 I think this is something to watch ... I still have a hard time figuring out where the uncrossable "line" is, but it's somewhere around here:

A secretive right-wing group, Veterans For A Strong America, is attempting to do to President Obama what the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth did to Sen. John Kerry. And they aren't shy about it. The group's leader and sole employee, Joel Arends, told Mother Jones, "Yes, it's the swift boating of the president."

Meet the Astroturfer Planning to Swift Boat Obama

"Yes, it's the swift boating of the president," says the founder of a dark-money group claiming to speak for ticked-off Navy SEALs.

    --By Adam Weinstein

Veterans for a Strong America describes itself "a grassroots action organization committed to ensuring that America remains a strong nation by advancing liberty, safeguarding freedom and opposing tyranny." Founded in 2010, the ostensibly nonpartisan group kept a low profile until earlier this week, when it posted a splashyonlinead that uses statements from President Barack Obama to suggest that the commander-in-chief boasted about his role in killing Osama bin Laden, dishonoring America's military in the process.

"Heroes don't politicize their acts of valor," the ad declares amid shots of American soldiers and quotes criticizing Obama's "shameless" and "despicable" attempt to claim credit for bin Laden's death. Not all of those quotes are in context: The video flashes "Obama Spikes the bin Laden Football," a headline from a post in which Mother Jones' Kevin Drum wrote that the bin Laden raid proved Obama's "leadership."

Karl Rove praised the ad on Twitter, calling it "powerful," and it rapidly burned up the right-wing blogs. "The swift boating of Obama has begun," The Atlantic announced. "One thing that's clear from this advertisement, if more current and former SEALs decided to come out of the woodwork in opposition to Obama, it could do real damage to him."

Joel Arends, Veterans for a Strong America's founder, chairman, and sole staffer, tells me he's proud of his organization's viral video, even if it's characterized as swift boating. "Yes, it's the swift boating of the president, in the sense of using what's perceived to be his greatest strength and making it his greatest weakness."

How many million$ have been spent to bring down the President?
How many hours have people spent? It started before he took office.

Interesting question. I would think its about the same as how many hours the President And his people have spent trying to discredit a former President. And it probably boils down to it being politics. One wonders if, when no longer President, Obama will be completely mum about whomever takes his place. That shows real class and GWB hasn't made a peep about Obama.

Heron was not posting about the official Romney Campaign. I think it was about the unaccounted for non campaign money spend to try to make the President fail.

Before President Bush was elected I don't remember anyone saying he was anti American. Or being as these people were so very afraid that if Obama were elected in 2008 terrorists and/or Blacks would take over.

I admit I really hated the Iraq war. It hurt my soul as an American. Both the first President Bush Gulf War that was clearly about oil and then the second war of choice.
Before he started "Shock and Awe" I liked President Bush. After i literally cried alomost every day for years.

I think it's safe to say that the strategy has been used by everyone who's ever run for public office.

For me, the questions are: is it ethical? Does it help me think critically about an issue?

Where's the line between using advertising techniques to spread a message (for people to think about) and using advertising techniques to game the system (by pushing peoples' non-rational buttons)?

They are spending tens of millions on a political ploy publicizing allegations, falsehoods, and distortions to discredit the President with the intention of getting the media and voters to discuss whether the allegations are true rather than discuss actual issues.

I think the President himself is creating "issues" because he has nothing, or almost nothing, to show for time in office. Is that him making straw man arguments?

He can't talk about the great economy or job market, his health care plan is in jeopardy, maybe even his determination to ignore illegal immigration...all nothing to brag about. So instead he will continue to bash GWB by saying Romney is more of the same, make up a war on women, yama, Yama, yada. My conservative opinion.

Obama administration reports record number of deportations

The Obama administration deported a record number of illegal immigrants for the third straight year, according to figures released Tuesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Despite facing criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, officials promised to continue the White House policy of prioritizing for removal those illegal immigrants with criminal convictions. ...

Tit for tat aside (people get mad when we blame Bush, but yet repeated say "well look what you did to Bush when it suits them, as if it negates any current allowance to complain)......it's perfectly reasonable that the other side is trying to bring down the President...just like one side tried to bring down Bush and every other President. That's politics and it gets dirty, ugly and lots of low blows are thrown.

Now with superpacs and the tens and millions of dollars spent, it's jaw dropping to think about.

    YAWN.......

What's lame about this effort is that President Obama repeatedly praised the heroes that brought down Bin Laden. Knowing that he would have been burned at the stake for failure, it's amazing that not one ounce of praise should come his way? I'm thankful that we have such strong and brave SEALS in our defense but I'm also proud of the President on this one.

I was at WalMart waiting to check out. A political discussion was taking place between two cashiers. Both agreed that Obama had not lived up to his promise, but who could they vote for on the other side.
One cashier lamented that Romney was not a viable candidate "because he is rich". !!!!!!!!
My post really doesn't have much to do with the OP except as an example of what several million dollars of smear money can do.
How is it possible, that in the land of opportunity, being successful can be made to look evil?

My man is a pretty high ranking officer..what we have discovered during his deployment to the mid east is that the whole thing feels like a scam,, there are MANY folks like him wearing the uniform for their country to serve us all to be proud of ....but for the most part the military is a big farce,, it's a business with politics and games like every other industry where God and Country are not first in the upper crust.. at this juncture we both just want him to get home safe so we can move forward.. ..LOVE our Country but NOT our politics ...:-( So disheartened..and BTW not an Obama fan but really don't feel he has any part of the disenchantment,, part of the fair ability to discern facts from emotion,,
