- Nov 8, '12 by tntrnReally? When he endorsed Obama twice, why would Republicans vote for him?
I loved Herman Cain, still do, and I also like Susana Martinez. There are others.....Condi, I would vote for her in a heartbeat, but I think she is not interested. - Nov 8, '12 by wish_me_luckHe's a republican still, tnt (Colin Powell). He has a wonderful military background and government experience, been married for almost 50 years, carries himself like a president, very smart, speaks eloquently and he is well respected around the world. I would vote for him and so would my mom. Both of us voted Obama this year. You want a GOP president? Nominate someone with credentials. Also, you need someone who will compromise on issues too and appeal to the Democratic population. That's how you do it.
PS I am in the swing state of VA. - Nov 8, '12 by tntrnQuote from wish_me_luckI respect your reasons and thank you for providing them. Still, I cannot imagine why he could go with Obama over Romney (as a Republican) and therefore he wouldn't be on my list at all. His credentials might be good for a third party ticket at this point. He's a republican still, tnt (Colin Powell). And I agree that with all you said about him....just not that he could win running as a Republican now.Medic2RN likes this. - Nov 8, '12 by tntrnBut I like this train of thought you are on. That said, who should the Democrats run who would appeal, in HUGE numbers to the conservatives?VivaLasViejas and Spidey's mom like this.
- Nov 8, '12 by wish_me_luckI am a moderate. I vote on candidates, not parties. I did vote democrat this year, as well as last time. So, you can slap whatever label you want on Powell, but bottom line is he has credentials, experience, and lives the values that the republican party was founded on, yet supports the right for LGBT people to marry, supports getting out/staying out of wars, creating jobs, etc. I do believe that makes him a moderate republican, which is what people want. Oh, and he can probably get the minority vote because he is African American/Black. I honestly would vote him almost regardless of who the democrats ran next time. I would actually love to be part of Powell's campaign, if he was the GOP candidate.
Why would you, tnt, not vote Powell? I want to hear evidence that he does/does not make him less than ideal, not "he endorsed Obama". Thanks for good conversation.TheCommuter and tewdles like this. - Nov 8, '12 by Spidey's momMr. Powell is a great man but I don't agree with his political stances for the most part. The fact that he voted for Obama twice is enough for me NOT to vote for him. Regardless of credentials, experience, etc., he is not conservative. I can't just vote for someone who looks presidential, carries himself well, etc.
As a conservative Republican I want a conservative.
Allen West comes to mind. Bobby Jindal. Marco Rubio.
I was sad to see Mia Love lose in Utah by the way.
tntrn - your idea about who Dems should run who would appeal to conservatives is a good one!!!
- Nov 8, '12 by Spidey's momColin Powell on the Issues
Here's a whole list of how he thinks about issues. Many of them I agree with but many I don't. It reads like fiscal conservative/social liberal. AKA . . . .libertarian!tewdles and CrufflerJJ like this. - Nov 8, '12 by wish_me_luckJim Webb of VA...Tim Kaine took his position. He's a democrat that is a moderate. That's who I can think of democrat wise that would appeal to conservatives. The young population is becoming the largest voting population in the US. You are going to have to appeal to them (and minorities).
I don't like any of the options you threw out as candidates.
Oh, and why does the candidate have to be extremely left or right? I want a moderate.tewdles likes this. - BCgradnurse and aknottedyarn like this.
