Maryland Board of Nursing

Maryland is a very Liberal State. The Maryland Board Of Nursing is now paperless. They will no longer allow you to renew by mail. You have to renew on-line. You have to have an email address, you have to include your personal information including your social security number, you have to pay by credit card and they do not have a privacy policy. Your information is also shared with NCSBN. They too have all of your personal information shared by your Local State Board or Nursing.
In Maryland a large portion of your license fee goes to the Obama Health Care Research. there is no way to opt out.
Let's discuss how you can protect your privacy as a Nurse.

Is it possible to renew in person?

No. When you go there you have to use their computer.

Is your larger concern the access or the privacy?

My concern is privacy. Their site doesn't explain where your information goes. I don't like using a credit card except for emergencies. I prefer cash or check. The Board said that I can BUY a prepaid debit card. It is not convienent and costs more money. I don't feel I should have to do that. Whenever you call them, the recording states please have your Social Security ready. I have a license number. What is that for? Yes, it's all about privacy. I do not trust them. Years ago their computer system was hacked and they had to shut it down. There is no privacy statement on their web site either. And why do I have to pay for Obama Health Care research? I called the Board and they said that the fee was not part of the nursing license but there is no opt out. Can't you see, the board is extreme left.

I looked on the BON site.
Unless youíve already done so you need to be fingerprintedand complete a criminal background check: http://www.mbon.org/main.php?v=norm&...hrc/index.html

Pleaseunderstand that if the Board receives your application, but it is incomplete because there is NO Social Security Number or Federal Tax ID Number, your application WILL NOT be processed and WILL BE returned to you.

The web site is partially correct. They have not updated their web site. They will only accept paper applications if your license has expired. If you wait till your license has lapsed, you will be granted a paper application along with a penalty. They will not give you a paper application in advance. Only after your license expires. Then you may write a check. You can go there in person to use their computer and to pay by credit card if you do not have a computer. If you do not have an email address, one will be assigned to you.
I have contacted my Local Represenative and so far, the MBON has not returned their calls.

I'm glad you are (hopefully) getting help from your state representative. The BON should actually do what their web site states.
Perhaps you can get the licensure application from this person as the web site states:

SHOCKER!! The MBON hasn't returned their phone call!?!? Their message probably went to one of the many false voice mailboxes that the never ending phone tree directs callers to. It's absurd the way that the MBON is run. No other business would survive if they treated their "customers" like they do. I guess they expect us nurses to "suck it up and deal" like usual...

Apparently, the BON is not returning the represenitive's calls either.
Techincally, the BON can give your information to people doing research or even sell it if they want to. They do not have a privacy policy. They say they do but it is for Patients only and it is on the DHMH web site.
Did you know that the State Board of Nursing will not renew your Nursing license if you owe taxes. I would like to know why?
