My Quest for reliable technology!
My computer was just past 12 months old and of course for the first time ever I didn't purchase extended care, as for previous computers I had never ever needed to use it! I believe this is called 'sods law' oh how I laughed when I took it to a repair shop 5 times at the cost of more than the cost of the extended care package would have cost to be told that they could find nothing wrong with it.It has been a while since I wrote an 'article' for allnurses.com, it was something which allowed me to let off steam, talk about hot potatoes and have a rant about something I believe in!
The reason I stopped writing was due to the fact that my computer was not working well and would freeze every five mins when I was on the internet which caused no end of problems.

Financially embarrassed I could not afford to buy a new computer so I felt like my arm was severed at the elbow. I used my Iphone but it can't perform as well as sitting down at the computer, plus I always lose my glasses so I frequently sent emails which were auto corrected with the wrong words. Has anybody else noticed that auto correct has a mind of it's own and can get you into a world of hurt?
Even worse than the auto correct is the voice text, has anybody tried it? It is a demon in disguise-now I must tell you I have a English accent and my home is in the US so I do have issues with technology which requires the use of my voice, especially on the phone!
I digress so I decided that I would somehow buy a new lap top, of course my dream lap top would have to be the Mac, I love Apple products they are idiot proof and easy to use, so designed for me! The prices of these computers are so expensive, but they make you drool at the mouth like a kid looking in a baker's window with no money to buy a cake or a cookie.
So for 6 months I have soldiered on with my wonky laptop and my iphone which makes me squint and get more crows feet than I need at my age. Dreaming about a computer but being practical and knowing I don't have the money to buy one - daughter needs shoes, clothes, music lessons, a phone.................you get the picture. Kids come first and their needs are upmost 9 times out of 10.
Now we are suddenly thrown feet first into an unexpected house move, which costs umpteen amounts of dollars! So again computer thrown to the side lines.
My job as an RN educator/quality auditor for a multi national company means I travel a lot so a car is an important item in my life so you can imagine the disaster of my car needing to be replace just after I moved house!
Then I did a foolish thing I went on the Apple website looking at the Mac Air, drooling at the mouth and what do you suppose I did? I applied for the interest free credit, and to my surprise I actually got it!
Now I could buy my new laptop, I stocked up my cart with wonderful computer items, I got as far as paying for it when I knew I could not justify buying it!
Everyday I went back, and everyday I placed the items in my cart and then I stopped short of pressing the submit button! For one whole month I did this and then on day 31 I thought ok I am ready, only to discover that the deal of interest free had expired on day 30 and now I would have to pay interest! My deal was fated not to happen!
So fast forward another month, I thought about all the ways I could buy my Mac, because I knew we were fated to be together. I still could not bring myself to get into debt by buying one! Then my cousin came from the UK for a visit and had to go to the actual Apple store.
Have you ever been to the Apple store, Oh my gosh! It is wonderful and the staff! Well the staff are so helpful, they spend so much time with you. So while my cousin talked with the assistant at the Apple store I drifted around, playing with the Mac's and wishing I could buy one! They even had the GOLD 5s Iphone, another thing I added to my wish list.
Guess what? A kind helpful assistant, helped me call the credit card company who instantly replaced the interest free deal back on my CC and I bought the Mac Air and left the store floating.
So now here I am with my new love, writing this silly article, 'why' I hear you asking - 'Why, because I can.'Last edit by Joe V on Oct 13, '13

You are tempting me madwife . . . .2Oct 15, '13 by OCNRN63LOLOL! Yes, I have been in the Apple store, more than once. It's like computer Nirvanah! When I go in there, I take long deep breaths, because even the air smells better.
I went through two PCs; one was a HP and the other was a Dell. The TOS here prevents me from expressing my true feelings about them.
I had thought about getting a Mac before, but I held off because someone told me I wasn't "smart enough" to use a Mac. Then an Apple store opened near me. I took a few tentative steps inside, then a very nice assistant came over and asked me if I needed any help. About two hours later, I walked, no, floated out of the store with a new laptop.
I got a new MacBook Pro about two years after the first one. There was nothing wrong with the original; in fact, I don't remember why I got it. So now my father is the proud owner of the previous MacBook, as well as an iPad and an iPhone, just like me. My mother reluctantly carries his older iPhone (she hates cell phones). We're a Mac family.
The thing I really like about Apple products is their reliability and ease of use. In addition, if you have to call for tech support, you get someone who is pleasant and speaks comprehensible English. My forehead is so grateful not to be beaten against the wall anymore.
I'm so happy you love your new laptop, but beware: Now that you've gotten the MacBook Air, you're going to find all sorts of reasons to go back to the Apple store.1Oct 15, '13 by Spidey's mom, ADN, BSN, RN GuideOCRN63 . . . . you have cemented in my craving . . . as soon as I can I'm headed to an Apple Store.0Oct 21, '13 by OCNRN63Quote from Spidey's momLOL! I just upgraded it to the latest desktop technology. Purchasing it four years ago was one of the wisest decisions I ever made.2Oct 31, '13 by GrnTea, BSN, MSN, RNMy first Apple (a IIc that booted up off of five-inch floppies and connected to a dot-matrix printer) is older than all the Mac Geeks in the store I bought it in 1985.
"They" told me not to do that because it would be too complicated for my kids. I said, "You'll have to tell my 5-year-old that-- she's at my desk writing a story right now." (Said 5-year-old is now a PhD in physics and buys Macs for her labs.)
Then "they" said, "There aren't as many programs and games for the Mac as for the Microsoft machines." And I said, "I don't care about games more than solitaire, and how many word processing and spreadsheet programs do you need, anyway?"
My latest baby is the MacBook Air, which I ordered with the max installable RAM and I got for interest-free for a year after said 5-year-old lorded hers over me until I couldn't stand it anymore. I adore it.
You want to read a great book, read the Jobs bio. It's a great read and gives a lot of insight into why there are those lovely Apple stores.1Oct 31, '13 by Spidey's mom, ADN, BSN, RN GuideI wasn't able to buy one due to my best friend getting sick last weekend with N/V. She lives in the town where there is an Apple store. So, I'm looking into just going online. I really wanted to be in the store and talk to a real live person though.2Nov 5, '13 by GrnTea, BSN, MSN, RNThey will always talk to you even if you bought it from somewhere else. You can bring it in with you and they'll help you out. Great company.0Feb 11, '14 by Spidey's mom, ADN, BSN, RN GuideI forgot to come back here and say I got my new MacBook Pro in December. I'm loving it.
But I need lessons. I bought it in the Sacramento area . . .I live 4 hours away so I can't take the classes offered there. My friend reminded me there is probably a youtube video out there somewhere to help me.
