Childcare for day orientation and military deployment/TDY

  1. Hello,

    I haven't posted on here in a while, but I wanted to find out what RNs do about childcare while on day orientations or when their active duty spouse is deployed or on TDY? I have a job offer coming soon to work weekend nights so my husband can watch our 4 month old son and avoid costly child care.

    My issue is, what do we do when I have to do 4 weeks of day orientations? He can either take out some leave time or we can get private care due to the fact that on base child care is full time 6a-6p M-F when I will most likely be doing daytime 7a-7p orientations.

    What are some other options? I would like to avoid costly childcare but we have only few friends in the area that work during the day.

    Also, my hubby might be up for a 6 month deployment soon and he takes frequent TDYs due to the job he does. There might be help in getting up the priority ladder for child care on base, but I don't want to pay for full week full time care if I were not to use it all.

    Any help is greatly appreciated, I am a new mom and a new RN that wants to find a solution to this probably common problem.

    I know how you feel, my husband is Navy and I am starting my first job as an rn next week as well. I have a baby too, she is 5 months an I also have a 5 year old and an 8 year old. Where are you working? I'll be at Baylor all saints. I'm actually working days and have a friend watching the baby but my husband is also days. I know how you feel though, my husband is gone a lot too and I am stressed about how everything will work out when he is away. Just wanted to let you know I understand! I wish I had more advice but I know how hard it is . Best of luck to you

    If I remember correctly (it has been a few years since I was an Army wife) childcare on post is full time only. You pay for whether you use it or not. You do get 2 weeks off a year for vacation etc. The same goes for the in home on post childcare. Unregistered/uncertified in home childcare on post is frowned on, especially full time hours. If you are only going to need child care on occasion you might want to check out an off post child care center with drop off slots or off post in home childcare. I am not sure if this is still the way it works or not. Being a military spouse is not easy. Good luck to you.

    I know this is a relatively old thread, but I can almost guarantee you your AD spouse won't be getting leave time to cover you for child care. It doesn't work that way. And yep, on base you pay whether you use it or not, and if you keep on doing 'drop-ins', they'll refuse to renew you the next month. You're taking up space someone else could use. I'd find a church oriented or private, CERTIFIED/CREDENTIALED daycare off base with per diem privileges. There are usually many within spitting distance of a military base, because they know it's needed.
