    (07-22) 14:55 PDT SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) --

Unaware that a live microphone was broadcasting their words around the Capitol, Assembly Democrats meeting behind closed doors debated prolonging California's budget crisis for political gain.

Members of the coalition of liberal Democrats talked about slowing progress on the budget as a means of increasing pressure on Republicans.

A microphone had been left on during the closed meeting Monday, and the conversation was transmitted to about 500 "squawk boxes" that enable staff members, lobbyists and reporters to listen in on legislative meetings.

Some members of the group, including Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, said if the budget crisis were extended, it could improve chances for a ballot initiative that would make it easier for the Democrats to raise taxes by lowering the threshold for passage from two-thirds to 55 percent.

"No one is running" for re-election, she said, according to a transcript made by Republicans. "And maybe you end up better off than you would have, and maybe you don't. But what you do is show people that you can't get to this without a 55 percent vote."

Assembly Republican Leader Dave Cox said that he was disappointed that Democrats would consider using the budget crisis to their political advantage.

Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson, a Democrat, tried to brush aside criticism of the meeting, calling it a "bull session" that didn't have much significance.

"For anyone, Democrat or Republican, to think there is some political advantage in this crisis, I think they are wrong," he said.

Goldberg said her comments were part of a larger discussion about whether it would be better to make deeper cuts this year to give taxpayers a taste of how bad things would be without a tax increase.

"It meant whether or not we do the things this year or next year that let the public understand how serious the situation is," Goldberg said.

I've always thought that Democrats thrive on what's going wrong in the country - seems to be true at least in Cali.

Just looks like another example of politicians talking out of both sides of their mouth.

You'll see a large number of Democrats trying to down-play this. "We didn't really mean it."

You'll see a large number of Republicans trying to capitolize on it, and make the most out of every word that was said, even if it is irrevelant.

What you won't see is any of them talking straight out about the "feces" they are trying to pull off in their own behalf. They are all out for only themselves, and they don't really give a rip what happens to the people.

    Flame suit on, switching feet.

It was the #1 story on "Countdown with Keith Olberman" last night on MSNBC. Great show...very informative, very funny...unlike other commentators, he goes after both the left and the right.

Yes, heard it last night when my 20 year old got home from driving a logging truck all day. "Did you hear what the Democrats got caught doing?". He had been listening to Rush.

Ken, I don't think what was said is irrevelent. I think it shows how low some politicians will go. The Democrats have been trying to get the 2/3 majority threshhold lowered to 55% for years to make it easier to raise taxes. We need the 2/3 majority otherwise there will be no way to keep the politician's feet to the fire when it comes to reducing spending versus raising taxes. To say that it would be good to let Californians suffer in order to proceed with the Democrats agenda is wrong.

There is so much wasteful spending in our state . . . . lets start there first.

Not flaming you . . . and you don't have your foot in your mouth.

I DID hear it in the mainstream media.
I think in the case of some of them of them it is more dangerous than greed or power.
They think the end (keeping all the program$) justifies the means (strategy & manipulation).

Well, what a surprise! NOT! It seems that politicians everywhere, of both Republican & Democratic ilk see fit to manipulate state budgets in an effort to try to raise taxes.

The former Republican governor of Tennessee apparently made the budget crisis look even worse than it was in his efforts to create an income tax. It didn't work, thank goodness!

There's nothing new under the sun, is there?

I read it online yesterday. I'm not surprised, and there's NO telling how often this REALLY happens - they just happened to get caught this time. I think it's shameful that they are so willing to screw the very people who have elected them. But then again, some people HAVE no shame.

IMO, they should be removed from office immediately, if not sooner. NO ONE with that kind of mindset and morals needs to be representing anyone.
