Woo-Hoo! A surprise check!

  1. I got a check from the US Treasury today for $1200.
Maybe we overpaid this year (I don't see how).
Now where is that Motorcycle accessory catalogue?

I am jealous, my check came today and I only got $171 for my two little darlings. Heck, school clothes already ate that up. How many kids are you claiming Rusty????

Yep, we all get one Russell . . those of us with kids and those of us who pay taxes anyway. Mine will be $800 and boy do I need it!

It is a new law called "Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003". It is a $400 child tax credit for 2003.

    Oh, ok!
Now I know WHY I got it.
ummm...Don't we have this huge national debt going on?
Can we afford to be paying ourselves like this?
    Berta,
    3 kids here.

Maybe the checks are intended to offset the loss of overtime pay we will be enduring.

I have no money yet, but I did get a nice goverment form letter that said mine was on the way. They said it would be here within 2 weeks. That is like 2 months in goverment talk, right?

    We got $400 for 2 kids-age 17 1/2 + 14.
Now how many kids do you have Russell---can I borrow yours?

For some arcane reason, when your child turns 17, you can no longer claim a child tax credit. They are still a dependant though. I don't get it. They still live in my house. Still in school. Still cost me money.

Any tax experts out there who can explain why I don't get a tax credit for a child over 17?

I didn't know that. I thought you could claim them till 18 (or later if they're in college). IRS rules have never been my strong point.

I got my letter on Thursday and got my check in todays mail. For once, the gov't didn't take its sweet time. I just can't figure out how I ended up with only $171 for two kids. Shouldn't that have been $800? Or is it based on total income? That would kind of make sense, since we were poorer that church mice last year and didn't make diddly.
