CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A forest preserve park was searched for stray dogs Tuesday, two days after a female jogger was mauled to death, while animal control agents tried to reassure residents that there were not packs of wild dogs on the loose.

"We don't have some problem of wild animals living in the forest preserve. It's stray animals that were probably owned by someone who abandoned them," said Dan Parmer, director of the Cook County Department of Animal Control.

Animal control and sheriff's officers searched the Dan Ryan Woods on the city's southwest side and set traps for any stray dogs, Parmer said. Police shot and killed two pit bulls Sunday; a litter of puppies was found Monday.

Two maulings occurred Sunday. Anna Cieslewicz, 48, a nurse, was mauled to death as she jogged through the woods. A 46-year-old woman also was attacked and was being treated at a hospital. She has asked that no other information be released.

Neighbors of the park, which contains jogging, biking and horse riding trails, say they have complained about stray dogs before.

"That's why I'm so upset," Tom Justic said. "This lady could be alive today, God bless her, if this was checked out."

Disgusting. I don't know why people are so incapable of taking care of their animals. Just a few weeks ago there was a teenage girl mauled by two mastiff crosses that had escaped from their owners' yard. The doctor who treated her said it looked more like a bear attack the damage was so extensive. The owners will not be charged with anything though the animals were put down.

I am a BIG dog lover and have owned "pit bull" type dogs growing up, and I think if a dog attacks a person the owner (and possibly the breeder) should be responsible. Well bred, well socialized dogs do not maul people to death, and that is the owner's responsibility.

Any dog will run in a pack whether it is stray or not. It's their true nature. If one is away at work and a loved and loving pet is free to roam it will join a pack.

We humans always think we have a handle on things, A woman jogger was killed here by a mt. lion not long ago. If you run you are pray.
This is the scary fact of the natural world.

If a wolf or cougar out in the woods attacks a human it is doing what is natural. If a dog attacks a human in the woods it is usually doing it because some other human abandoned it there. In neither animal's case is anything immoral or illegal or unethical going on. In the case of the dog owner some crimes have been committed and immoral behavior and unethical behavior abound.
