she actually called him "a lazy Walloon, a slave and an inferior creature." The couple was an 'interacial' couple and linking his traits to being a 'walloon' made it a racial comment.
As such, it's no different than many laws here. You can be fired, kicked out of school, and in some cases, arrested for saying things in a racial/sexual connotation here, too. I'm not saying that's a bad thing - but you can go overboard on anything.
If you think this is limited to Belgium, you should look at some of the thought police on campuses across this nation.
Freedom of speech isn't as free as you would like to believe. What she said was very uncivil - but should it be illegal and/or meriting being penalized? That's a question for us, here, too.
