Why Dick York suddenly quit his role of Darrin on Bewitched.

  1. We started renting the old series Bewitched from Netflix. I was curious about the stars and especially why Dick York suddenly quit the show. I found out the sad fact that he was a chronic pain patient who was dependant on painkillers and steroid injections for an old back injury and he collapsed on the set one day and suddenly quit the show.

I never could adjust to the new Darrin, Dick Sergeant. Anyways, since I'm now a premium member (thanks to the Christmas gift I received from a poster here) I thought I would start this thread and share this bit of TV trivia.

I used to love that show, but it worked so much better with the old Darrin. Although, I could never understand why someone who looked like Elizabeth Montgomery and had magical powers would've ended up with either of them.

Dh and I always like watching the shows with Aunt Clara. The first Gladys Kravitz was much better, too. She also died young, in her 40s, of cancer.

I read about that a long time ago - I actually liked the second Darrin better because it just looked like he might actually get such a gorgeous woman. And the way he acted wasn't so wimpy and WHINY.

I loved that show. Always wanted to be Samantha.

I remember reading that his pain was caused by arthritis and it eventually rendered him nearly immobile...

The Bewitched house is used on a lot of TV shows and commercials, I've noticed. It is on Fruit of the Loom's Christmas commercial right now.

I didn't like the 'other Darrin' at all. He seemed too cranky without the lovable factor that the original Darrin had.

Wow, isn't that funny. I thought the original one was crankier. :spin:

ITA... Dick York could make some pretty sexist comments or be bossy at times, but he had that "aw, shucks, I'm such a bumbling oof" factor that you couldn't help but like him. Dick Sargent didn't have the same likability at all, IMHO.

I thought the 'other Darrin' was just too shrill. The original Darrin had more sex appeal and I could see why Sam put up with his sexist ways. The second Darrin just lacked any sex appeal and was too shrill in his crankiness. Sam was very crafty and always managed to get her way in the end, and still appease both her husband and her mother.

That is why God made us all different . . we like different things.
