Why are nurses so special?

  1. At breakfast this morning, my daughter asked me why I thought nurses are so special. As I thought of the long shifts ahead of me I thought there is no one single answer to her question! I would like to hear from others why they think we are so special.

We give 100% all of the time. Because we care. Because we want to see people live life without pain, without depression, to live life to the fullest. Because we don't care how much our feet hurt or we missed our break if we are needed, we are there!

seems i answered this elsewhere but i don't see it. hmm

    like i said:

It's cause we do so much for so many, so often, and on so little, and we are SO good at it! THAT is what makes us special!

Because this person started about 8 threads identical to this- all at the same time. And right after our little troll got banned for the 5th time.

Sometimes there are so many reasons for something that they just cannot be accurately listed...Perhaps, first and foremost, because we bring the human component to others. We give of ourselves and experience and take knowlege, caring and the willingness to learn and share, away from the experiences we encounter.
We give and take love, anger, frustration, perserverance, nuturing, limit setting, pain, suffering, laughter and joy....We somehow just open up, reach out and jump into the fray...
In doing this we have to deal with all sorts of obstacles and stress, but there are few among us who would not go to extreme lengths to advocate a patient....
Close the door and insist to the patient he or she get more help if the help they are currently receiving is inadequate or dangerous.
Sit by the side of a bed and cry with a patient, yet preserve enough strength and fortitude to be sure that pt knows he or she is and will be as safe and comfortable as you can possibly make them.
Somehow you communicate , wordlessly sometimes, perhaps through a touch or gaze, or some kind of combination, that you are the one who will be and is there for them....
You listen to them suffer and weep inside and sometimes outwardly...
    You cry with the families...
    You suffer with them...
You share compassion and work NOT to be recognized for trying to provide a safe haven, believing that it is both your destiny and duty to be there.
You bring the essence of you into the equasion.
    You bring humor and laughter...
You bring yourself, and therefore do not qualify as selfish, but selfless..
You make mistakes and learn from them.
You accept that you make mistakes sometimes.
You hope that just one iota of your care makes a difference
and, on some level, you "know" every patient you have ever had the pleasure ( or displeasure) of caring for, because every single one in some way, shape or form, accompanies you down the path to the nurse you are at the moment...
You may not recall specific names, or diagnoses, but as far as patients go and the contributions of them and their families to your journey as a nurse, You never forget.....
But, that is just one observation along the way......

I have locked or deleted all of the threads, except for the three that have replies. And there is no proof that this poster is anything but a newbie, who doesn't know the rules of a BB such as this. Please give her a chance, it's a question worth thinking about!
