Who know something about cars?

  1. Why are we reduced to babbling childish idiots when our cars don't work?

My car won't start. Takes a jump almost immediately, runs fine. But the minute I turn that bugger off, it won't start again. Hubby thinks it's the battery, and will be getting me a new one tnight after work. I think it's not the battery. If it were the battery, wouldn't it stall?

When you turn the key to try to start it, no sound, (not even that pathetic sound like when you leave your lights on at night) except for this ticking sound. Tick, tick, tick, tick real fast.

So, does anyone have any brilliant ideas so I can sound real brilliant when my hubby gets home?

Sounds like the battery, most likely a shorted cell....take it in, they will check it b4 they replace the battery.

The only thing you need the batery for, assuming your alternator is good, is to start the car. Once it is running you can remove the battrty and it will keep running. Unless the alternator is bad, in which case once the battery is run down the car will stop.

In this case, I would go with the battery.

Well thank you BOB! (where you been by the way? We've missed you!)

Unfortunately, this means the hubby was right. Darn!

Very interesting about taking the battery out after the car is started. I learn something new everyday!

This reminds me of my first car, a Chevette (don't laugh). It was also a stick shift, so I had to learn how to drive that.
Now the interesting thing about a stick shift is... if you have someone push you while you're in the car, wait until you have a good speed going (say down a hill), if you pop the clutch, the car will start.
Ha! That was a cool trick for about a week. Then I ran out of friends willing to push the car for me.

I'd go with the battery. If the battery is fine, check the alternator.

I don't know *much* about cars, but it sounds like the battery to me, too. It's when the alternator is bad that the car stalls.

Cars - can't live without 'em - CAN'T like 'em!

Oh - except that new PT Cruiser. Isn't that cute? I'd love to have one of those!

bobs right...................shorted cell of the battery. if the car stalls, it's the alternator. it doesn't get any easier than that.

It could be the battery or the alternator. If you get it cranked, take the hot battery cable lose, if it will keep running, it is the battery. If not, it is the alternator. Also check the posts and make sure that they are not corroded. It could just be a loose connection. However, if the alternator is going bad, it can drain the battery and pretty quick, especially if you have to be out at night.

    Anywho, good luck.

When my car did that and I got the click, click sound it was the starter.

My apologies for my spelling error in the title of the thread. Makes me sound a little hillbilly. Just noticed it. Oops!

Yeah Mattigan, I thought something was weird with that click, tick, whatever. But when we have the battery tested, that will tell us I guess.
