Who is your favorite visual artist?

  1. I'm full of thread ideas today.

I've always been a great art appreciator. In fact, I've even painted a few things myself (they suck). So.... whose art do you admire, hate, not understand, wish you could afford? What do you have hanging in your house?

I HATE anything from Home Interiors. Sorry but its all chintzy and cheap.

I love Gustav Klimt, I have 'The Kiss' hanging in my bedroom.

I love John William Waterhouse, Van Gogh, Escher... generally I'm not much for impressionists. I like Picasso, Dali. I like art with strong, clear form. I like art the same as I like people, open, passionate, something to say.... no waffling.

I feel like I SHOULD like Georgia O'Keefe since, you know, I have to support the lesbian community but I hate it. All that flowery crap. I hate her almost as much as I hate Melissa Etheridge.

The Scream I like, even though its everywhere. I think when a painting begins appearing on greeting cards and car commercials its gone pretty over the top.

    Any opinions?

Okay now, are you familiar with Douglas Coupland's art? Not just a writer.

Sides that, I'm really not much into contemporary art.

    Yeah, I really like Coupland.

I remember I saw you mention him in another thread and was going to comment on it, but I obviously forgot.

Mmmm....love anything Art Deco, all those clean lines. Peter Max. Van Gogh. Renoir. Monet. Manet. Rodin. Michaelangelo. Andy Warhol. Rousseau. Egyptian artifacts. Etruscan artifacts (such happy people!). Dali. Folk art. Chagall. I suppose I must be very visually oriented, hadn't really thought about it before! My walls are covered with prints, paintings, embroideries and mixed media (done by me, bought at thrift stores or garage sales). My current favorite is a photograph of a line of cabs in the New York Theatre District in the 40s; the first cab has a llama sticking its head out of the window (bought it at a garage sale for a dollar). Too surreal!

I have Van Gogh's all around my house. I have so many that I can't even put them all up at once, so I have alot in my basement. Sometimes I switch them around, but they are mostly waiting for when I have a bigger house. I was devastated when the basement flodded a few years back and some were ruined.

I do have 1 Monet in my bedroom. Purple Poppies. I never really cared for Monet much, but I love purple and my bedroom is purple, and I just knew it would look cool in there. I have been appreciating more ofMonet's work lately, especially when he paints the water. It's beautiful.

Oh, and those kissing angels. I like them too.

Franciso de Goya y Lucientes. Such emotion and darkness...Mmmm, come to Butthead.

SO has The Scream on my walls, right by Van Gogh's Starry night. I like them but they're way too overdone. Going to take them down if I ever get a decent paying job!!

I won't hang a painting in my home unless I can "feel" the mood of it! I have an African painting of various colors hanging in my living room. I have a painting of what "others" think Jesus looks like hanging in my hallway (I painted it myself actually). Everyone loves it, and wants to take it from me. My husband made me a rose picture in an art class he attended a couple years back, and framed it for me. I love it so much, it hangs in my hallway, too.

BUT......the BEST paintings of all........are outside.....no one paints art like Mother Nature can......here's one I really love a lot. It's a photo of Mt. Shuksan.

Renoir is good, as well as Klee. But I have to say without hesitation Guiseppe's art just brings me to my knees with it's use of color, hue, realism, and emotion. He should be displayed in all of the finest art galleries in the country And that's not just hype from me folks. Love ya guys, Warrior Woman.

We collect local absract art from local artists. We have these darling sculptures made of each of us. We sent pics in to this artist and a little bio of what we are/like. She sent them back. They are so darling. It's just a bust of us (you know, from the waist up?), but we love them. They were around $75.00 to make/each!
