What's Your 5 Seconds To Fame Moment?

  1. Hey all,
With "American Idol" and "Five Seconds To Fame" hot on the TV network, I thought it would be interesting to hear your stories of meeting a celeb, "hanging" with a band or knowing someone who knows somenone who's a distant counsin of someone famous (Ha!).

Mine = I worked at a local record (Did I say record? 33 and a 3rd?) store as a buyer and got backstage to most of the "then in " concert acts. Backstage is not all its cracked up to be. You can't see the show, GROUPPIES everywhere and the artists usually leave after they perform. However I'll never forget watching the Beastie Boys play hoop with RUN-DMC during their hay-day tour along with LL Cool J and Whodini. (OK...I'm aging myself!). I'll tell you other memories later...?

Well.......Cassius Clay AKA Mohammad Ali...is a third cousin to my deceased maternal grandmother. Also.......Roy Meriweather...famous jazz player of loooooonnnnnnnggggg ago...is my father's distant cousin.

I got to go inside Tina Sinatra's home one time long ago with my Uncle and the woman he was dating at that time (my uncle's girlfriend was Tina Sinatra's seamstress). Anyway.....Tina outgrew a lot of clothes, or plain ol' didn't want them, so guess who they were given to? ME!!! Did I make a big deal out of it? NO! I'm sooooo low key about stuff like that. I believe in people having a right to their privacy, and there was nothing to brag about. Do I still have any of those clothes? Nada! I was a size 5 back in the day.....that's a size that has "died and gone to heaven" as far as I'm concerned. :kiss

My dad was famous in our area for having an apartment that the bands could rehearse in...he was fascinated with sound--
    Introduced me to Nick Brignola
and lots of others that I can't think of right now...
I really didn't think of them as famous because we just all kinda hung out together....

Ummm....my dad got me the autograph of Mazeppa Pompazoidi, the guy who hosted the late night Saturday horror movies on TV in Tulsa in the 70s...

That's as close as I've gotten...

I've met Bonnie Rait in person (gave her a hug even) and John Prine (ever hear of him?) I partied with Commander Cody and the Nitty gritty dirt band and others who are even more obscure than those.
ps: Bonnie Rait was a thrill

I once saw Sylvester Stallone when I was on vacation on the island of St. Martin. Once stayed in the same hotel as the Boston Celtics. Once ate across a table from actress Sean Young (she's not a very nice lady). Got to meat authors Douglas Coupland and Carol Shields (the stone diaries). Once got on the news when I was in highschool.

Back in '89 I took some students to Mexico. We saw Arnold Swarzenegger in the airport in Mexico City. He was filming the Predator movie. Rustyhammer, love John Prine. My brother kinda looks like him and sings just like him.

I met a Titan (TN) football player once last year (don't remember his name but my bf has his phone #). We (my bf, me, the titan football player, & his gf) went out to dinner that night. I had no idea who he was, but he & my bf met at a gas station. He liked my bf's car (a 1999 Jag black convertible) so he invited us to get drinks. I later looked him up ... to see if he was who he said he was.... and he was. Kinda cool to just hang with someone... I wasn't all over him as though he was a star or anything. I didn't care who he was, he was just nice.

I was once on the Howard Stern show about 14 years ago! I was working for NutriSystem....... and they used to have clients go up to the show once a week for testimonials.... well we couldn't find a client one week..... so since I was 100lbs and a size 3 at the time...... they figured they have me go up and lie... that I was on the diet...... Hey I was..... I was 100 lbs because all I did was stay out all night, drink, smoke cigarettes and live on Perrier!

Anyhow.. I went on the show.. everybody was listening..... including my dads friends..... well you know Howard... it was the 80's and I was wearing a black, backless, mini spandex dress.... Howard said... let me see your shoes.... all of sudden Jackie the Joke man said he just saw Fidel Castro with out the cigar! You get it....

From then on it was downhill...... the sexual innuendos and references were non-stop..... my poor dad was mortified! I later got invited to his bday party about 2 months later... I went and ended up going out with Gary for drinks!

That was my big 15 minutes of fame!

Well, I am originally from Chicago and my parents were raised in the city. Back then the group Chicago was called the CTA(Chicago Transit Authority) or something like that. Anyhow, my mom went to an all girls school and at the all boys school next door was Peter Cetera, the lead singer for the group.
He asked my mom to prom and they went together. My grandparents hated him because he used to carry drumsticks around and banged them everywhere.

So....my mom dumped him for my dad.

Rebel, you are way cool. You actually saw some of the folks that I loved from back in the day.....Beasties, Run DMC, LL, and especially Whodini. I still love that "Freaks Come Out at Night" song.

I once met Will Smith(The Fresh Prince) back in the day and got his autograph in San Diego when I was a Seaman in the Navy.

I have been to John Mellencamps house...(he was not home- I know the person who watched his kids--this was in the early 80's), Kenny Arnoff (drummer) is a friend of my brother in law and was at his wedding. (I also went to his house for the wedding shower)

I have sat at the next table from Bobby Knight a couple of times in restaurants (Did not talk to him) (Indiana, now Texas Tech basketball coach)

It was not very exciting to see these people.... but....I would like to meet Dr. Phil !
