What is your favorite, and LEAST favorite, Christmas song? - page 2

So let's have some fun. :) Last night, while bored, I did a Google search of the worst Christmas songs of all time. Some of them are pretty bad. For the most part, Christmas music annoys me... Read More

I like Silver Bells, because it reminds me of shopping as child with my mother, and looking for the bells on the street lights. I thought we were in the city, but looking back it was just 2 blocks of stores in the local town. But for a country girl, it seemed like a city!
I also like John Lennon's So This Christmas, or what ever the official title is. And Feliz Navidad, always gets my feet tapping!

Dislike Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. I worked retail before nursing, and that song seemed to play every stinking hour on the PA.
And I dislike Silent Night, it just seems so sad and mournful.

Silver Bells is okay, depending how it's orchestrated and who might be singing it. Just the music, with no singing is okay, too.
Karen Carpenter's version of "Chestnuts, etc." ...well, she has a good voice, but her version of that song is sooooo syrupy.

I'm trying not to be so humbug about Christmas and to disregard all the insanely rampant commercialism. I listen to 106.9 The Light and like some of the Christian rock bands newer songs about Christmas being about Jesus being born. Although I can't tell you artists and titles, because mainly I'm listening to the lyrics to get my head and heart in a good space so I won't be "harumphing" and feeling discontented with the usual holiday milieu.

"Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Cannot be beat!

Go easy on Taylor Swift. Back in 2010 or so, when Tennessee got hit with terrible flooding, she donated $500,000 to the restoration of the Grand Ole Opry.

$500,000 = half a million dollars. I think she was 17 years old. She also takes up other causes.

While I don't care for any of her music, she earned my respect with that donation.
Fair enough. I used to like her a lot. Used to. That's fine that she donates money. I honestly have zero respect for any of these multi-million/billion dollar celebrities who DON'T donate some of that money.

Her version of "Santa Baby" is awful.

to cardiafreak & farawyn - I know that Christmas song. It's an old country song from I think, Kitty Wells. It's a very moving Christmas story about a child from an abusive alcoholic home who pleads for Dad not to be drunk for Christmas. It kind of just grabs at you!

to NurseCard - I agree about those with the big money who squeeze it tighter than Ebenezer Scrooge. Entertainment celebrities and SPORTS FIGURES, especially, disappoint me. Big whoop made for TV promos where they hand out some gifts or serve food in some food kitchen - big whoop. When they make some $24 million dollars/yr contract! Oh yeah!

Now if they are doing something anonymously, I take back my words.

But back to Christmas music - I like my old album from The Lettermen. The harmonies are terrific. Also that Christmas album from Barbra Streisand (she's standing in a a spotlight silhouette all in surrounding darkness. I think I learned from somewhere it is the music industry's best selling Christmas album.

To abbnurse - we are so opposite!!! I CANNOT tolerate the barking dogs song. Makes my teeth grit!.

And Grandma and the Reindeer is hysterical. It's meant to be silly and dumb.

There is a Vietnamese Buddhist acquaintance of mine who LOVES Christmas songs; she is so excited when the season comes around, and has Christmas songs playing/streaming on every piece of equipment she has, where ever she is!

Favorite- I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen, Merry Christmas Darling, Carol of the Bells, Step into Christmas (who doesn't love some snappy Elton John), Any of Ella Fitzgeralds covers.

Least favorite- I worked at Christmas Tree Shops for a spell and they had the worst Christmas playlist in the universe. Taylor Swifts Mr. Grinch, Mamasita donde esta santa claus, and this extremely slow banjo cover of Charlie Browns "Christmas time is here" which made me want to stab myself it was so slow and depressing and just weird.. to this day I've never heard that version again.

Every time I hear 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' I think of Allen Sherman's version, "God Rest Ye Jerry Mendelbaum..." Hahahahaha!

Also do not like the Christmas songs about some donkey and the hippopotamus song.

    Oh Holy Hippo?
It Came Upon a Hippo Clear?
    We Three Hippos?
    Hippo Bells?
All I Want for Christmas Is Two Hippo Teeth?

I am not familiar with any Christmas song that contains lyrics about hippopotami...and I'm not entirely sure I wish to be enlightened as to same!

When my daughter was two she put her little plastic hippo in the manger with the sheep and cow.
I remembered this song from the Captain Kangaroo show. This video has her singing it at age ten in 1953 and than recently:
