What is the difference in assertiveness and aggression?"

  1. I read a simple definition that I thought was good and thought I'd share it with you.

Assertiveness is standing on your own two feet.

Agression is standing on someone else's toes.

more than i likely i will be spammed for this comment, but i couldn't resist:

assertiveness is a man taking control of a situation

aggression is a woman taking control of the same situation (of course she is usually called a b**** in that instant)

    just my opinion....

Assertiveness is when a person can get their point across without alienating the other person in the process. The manner in which one who is assertive speaks is full of tact and not disrespect for the character of another, but is capable of pointing out the negatives of a situation without making the person being scolded feel like a heel in the process.

Aggression is getting your point across loud and clear, but losing all sense of respect for yourself and the other person. No tact is used, only hostility and a manner that demeans the other person's character.

Hey, Moonrose, you've got a point there...

The rules seem different for gals, aren't they?

Jerky docs who definitely got an aggression problem by Renee's description...are coddled and soothed, people make 'excuses' for them and their behavior...they are enabled to be rageaholics...

A female nurse who stands up for herself is often called a b***h when she is truly setting boundaries or being assertive....just using an 'I' statement can getcha called names...or you have a 'bad attitude'.

Notice the guy nurses are treated differently? Gotta admit I do...it's a man's world. <sigh>

There is a lot of anger behind aggression, assertiveness does not have this anger like quality to it. Assertive people don't make my hackles rise, angry ones do.

I hear ya on the anger distinction Oramar... I hear ya...

Moonrose: I agree there is a double standard if it stems from a woman being assertive and a man being assertive. It does get intrepreted different (IMHO).
