What are some of your bad habits?

  1. At work. My main one is I use my teeth as a third hand. You know, to uncap a syringe or something. How about you?

I leave all my notes for the end of the shift- so of course I don't get out on time- even though I HAVE time to write them during the shift!! I'm trying to get better about that. One of my goals this year.

at work? i am typically disorganized, easily distracted, have a big mouth, spend too much time with patients, get too involved, do not respond well to bossy authorities, self-righteous/opinionated, talk with the families too much, loud, quick temper sometimes, and expect all other nurses to possess same standards that i do.

    sigh..............is this enough?

I bite my fingernails down past the nailbed, and then I bite the skin around my nails until it's bleeding and sore...I bought some foul-tasting stuff to put on it daily to deter me from doing this...I'm gonna start it tomorrow. I am also overly critical of myself, something which I have been working on lately!

Without a doubt, my worse habit at work and at home is procrastination. I'm always writing reports the day before or the day they're due, waiting till the last minute to pay my bills online (and some places don't accept the fact that their own website was down as an excuse for paying late :/), getting my handouts together the day before a training, etc. I'm also very disorganized, moody and can hold a grudge like nobody's business.

One thing I am terrible about at work is ripping the tip off the index finger of my gloves for IV starts........they only keep one size/type of gloves around, and they're too thick---I can't feel anything through them---as well as too big. Well, if it's a choice between getting the IV in and taking a small risk of getting some really ugly disease, or NOT getting the IV in, I'm going to do the former. I know, I need to be proactive and work on management about getting in some different types of gloves.....but in the meantime, I'll just keep tearing off the index-finger tips and taking my chances.

Marla, I had to laugh when reading your post! I put the gloves on, after getting everything ready, and then try to feel the veins. Then I routinely rip the gloves off my hands and start the IV without them. This old nurse has just been starting them too long bare-handed! And I too wish there was a glove out there that one could feel veins through! (and it would have to be durable so as not to tear, and it would have to be cost-effective in order for the hospital to DEIGN to purchase it! Where's my magic wand????)

Earthchild, I'm with you, I bite my nails down down down. Wish I didn't, and YES, of course I've tried to stop (people think I LIKE my nails looking like this????), hate the acrylics: hate the time spent sitting, hate the money spent, hate wearing nail polish, hate the smell while they're being applied. Well, we can't wear them at work now anyway, so that's that! I do have two nails I keep longer, as "tools." My oh my, TMI!!! I'll quit now, lol!

I keep quiet about things that I really need to bring up to people. I let people walk all over me and then say "may I help you please?"

Leslie, can I shadow you for a day. LOL
