Well! It appears that one day we were mired in mud and rain and then BAM! Summer blew the door wide open.
With the temperatures soaring into the 90s, we have to be careful when outside that we do not cause a heat injury to ourselves.
Proper hydration plays a key role in remaining well and healthy in the sweltering temperatures. Water is a good start but with the humidity and heat index we must be cautious not to wash all the sodium out of our systems. This is where sports drinks come in. Gatorade, Powerade, WalMart's brand of Gatorade, Capri Sun...there is even a sugar free one for diabetics. A beverage fortified with sodium and potassium will help keep you hydrated while active out in the heat.
Wise and prudent advice: plan your activities for early in the day or early evening, limit one's activity during the heat of the day, listen to the weather for ozone advisories and the latest heat index. And if you must go out, take your beverage with you, take frequent rests in the shade, monitor your pulse rate and make sure you cool down properly.....and wear sun screen and protective eyewear, too!
Hey! Don't forget your precious furry pals in this heat too....they need extra care as well as you.......animals are just as suseptible to heat injuries as humans!
The South American culture was smart.....that afternoon siesta was not just for shammin........
