Wellness/Fitness thread 5/7/03

  1. Good morning!!

    It's kinda wet out there today. As this is probably the last busy day of the school year, I anticipate we will get out early and I can head off to the gym. It should be gloriously quiet there for the summer. And the traffic will be substantially less for my bike rides. Have to love living in a college town .

    My faith in my insurance company is restored lol. I got the notice in the mail that they covered my visit to establish with a doc. I figured they'd reject it since I wasn't actually sick . I know I touched on this recently, but when was the last time you had a physical exam (beyond what I've done for the past um - 15 years - which is calling my annual pelvic my exam - after all, doesn't my existence revolve around my hoo-ha?) Do you know what your cholesterol is? Please consider whether you might want to have someone give you a thorough once-over. (I know - we're nurses, and we love to self diagnose, but humor me here .) Are you doing your monthly breast self-exam? Good health in my mind is number (1) prevention of disease, but also catching unavoidable problems early enough to minimize the damage.

    Recipes (2 since I missed yesterday!):

    Super Veggie Spread

    2 celery stalks
    3 large carrots
    2 cloves garlic, peeled
    2 Tbs minced onion
    2 Tbs parsley
    1 Tbs dill
    2 Tbs tahini
    1/3 cup lemon juice
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp black pepper

    In a food processor, combine all of the ingredients. Mix
    until a creamy consistency is achieved. (For those of us without a food processor, you can also chop the celery and carrots VERY finely with a blender - or I use a hand chopper - then combine with other ingredients. Slightly different consistency, but still quite good.)



    Wild Rice Almond Casserole (crock pot recipe)

    2 cups wild rice (or brown/wild rice combo) uncooked
    1 cup slivered almonds
    1/2 cup onions, chopped
    1/2 cup celery, chopped
    8 ounces mushroom pieces, drained
    6 cups vegetable broth
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp pepper
    1/4 tsp garlic powder
    1 Tbs parsley

    Wash and drain rice. Combine all ingredients in slow
    cooker. Mix well. Cover. Cook on Low 4-6 hours, or until
    rice is finished. Do not remove lid before rice has
    cooked 4 hours.

    Unfortunaltely, a lot of men seem to think so. :stone I actually heard a man's description once of a woman being nothing more than a lifesupport system for her "hoo-ha" !

    OK.. onto more sane and productive things....

    been up since 0530...
    (yep, my day off! afraid I'll miss even one minute of it!)

    On my second batch of laundry.. ready to go out on the line. IF the weather cooperates, that is. Ready to do my workout, then hopefully mow and weedeat the yard. And while I'm doing that, I always peek into my birdhouses perched on the fenceposts... I have one bluebird guarding one of the houses like a little soldier.. I'm sure there's a wee nest in there. LOVE it !

    Do need to have my cholesterol checked again someday. Was borderline high 2 yrs. ago, and I'm not into fried or fatty foods at ALL, and certainly don't have a weight problem, so it must be genetics. Bummer.

    Thanks for the great recipies ! I LOVE rice and any kind of rice mixtures.. especially the wild rice kind ! Yummers !

    Finaaly started working out after a 2 month layoff. School ate up all my time and energy. I following a program from the April 2003 issue of Shape. It's the one that's supposed to help you lose cellulite. The weather although horrible this week, is better than it has been for a long time. That helps me get going too. I'm going to try to make at least 3 workouts a week. I need to relieve the stress this final semester of school is going to cause.
